An introduction...

Post by hytymes »

Well today I was finally forced out of the lurkers closet after 1 month of membership, so I'll take an opportunity to quickly introduce myself. In the past month I've really enjoyed the knowledge and humour provided by all the members here at AVCAN. Seems like a very good group of people.

I have had a lifelong interest in aviation, after logging hundreds of hours on flight sims, attending airshows since 1981, and staring up into the sky at any slight rumble, I realized that there was nothing stopping me from pursuing my dream of attaining my PPL.

I am training at Spectrum Airways CZBA. I am very pleased with the operation there. My instructor is very good and very accomodating. As a result, so far, I am happy with my progress. I'm trying to fly 2-3 times/week and am quickly realizing that Mother Nature sometimes has different priorities other than me.

I intend to fly recreationally, maybe purchase an a/c, and just enjoy the experience. I've got a long road ahead, I've yet to take groundschool but I have the material and I'm studying at least 2 hours a day. Hopefully that will give me an advantage when the September (saturday) course begins.

I can't speed on the highways in Ontario anymore so I'm taking it to the air! 90Kts would be considered racing. :D

Cheers all!

Welcome in the gang hytymes!

You'll find it much easier and rewarding than the Sim and worth the big expense.

Please keep us posted with your progresses and findings.

Welcome, and good luck on the PPL.

If you have any questions, I'm sure we'll give you 100 opinions on it... that is what Avcanada is all about after all - thousands of users disagreeing on the same material!

I'll get it started for you:

What type of a/c are you training on, and how much experience does your Instructor have? LOL, sorry, couldn't resist!

Best of luck, and welcome once again.

As if I forgot to mention instructor experience STL! Thanks for reminding me.

- Whatever you are paying your instructor, it is way too little! The minimum he/she should be making is 30K a year per student, regardless of how many hours they fly with you.

-Whatever experience your instructor has, it is way to little! Unless they are veteren aces from mig alley, da nang, the gulf war, and operation iraqi freedom, they are obviously incapable of teaching you how to fling your eager craft through the footless halls of air. If you are walking the flight line at the school, if you see any less than 5 kill marks on the 172 walk to the next one, he cant teach you shit.

-As soon as you get to the practice area, regardless of what your instructor says, automatically put the aircraft into a full blown spin. Do not pull out untill you have completed a minimum of 6 rotations. If the instructor asks you to stop, or attempts to recover FIGHT HIM. This is a classsic sign of an inexperienced instructor and is clearly a vetran of only 3 of the conflicts I mentioned and no body wants to be taught by a noob.

Thanks stl! I'm gonna answer your questions first because to be honest cookies, gladiator movies and beating my $30k instructor senseless in a 5 kill 172 during the sixth rotation are all things I'm saving for when the money runs out. :D

I'm training on 152s. I like the aircraft (despite the condition of the interiors in training a/c) they seem to wrap around you like your favorite pair of long underwear. I have flown a 172 once and found that although "faster" it didn't feel like an extension of me. Of course I'm sure that would come with time.

My instructor has approx 650hrs. All the instructors there are in their early-mid twenties. I was looking for more of a Goose than a Maverick, and I think I found him, so I'm trying to stick to using the same instructor... at least until I gain more experience. He seems responsible anyway and that's how I want to fly.

Thanks for the warm welcome, I will indeed keep you posted of my progress, and ask questions whenever necessary.

Thanks, At least I can read and write about it everyday. Due to weather I haven't flown in almost two weeks. Two steps back, so I'm told.

I booked 5 lessons in the next 8 days to make sure it doesn't happen again. The eraser is handy though. I need minimum two hits, maximum three per week IMO.

Way to go with not making your passion into a J-O-B. That can really blur you vision at times and make you do some foolish things to your life.

Have fun, fly safe.

Don't let it get that bad!

You should contact 200hr Wonder - I see on another thread he is looking to do some freelance stuff.

Looks like he's in YYC - maybe you could fly your plane out there for a few weeks and get your shit finished... Can you do that with a student permit? Or get some time builder to pay the gas and do a cross country out there with you. Or not... Seems a shame though to own your own plane and not have a license yet...

I really appreciate the offer. A change to the aviation career would be an incredible move, maybe a chance to finally do something I love.

However, I fly a 75 Ton crane for Magna Int. and it pays three times a ramp wage, so I think I'm stuck. Besides, not many people can say they can lift 100 000 lbs with one finger.
