Anyone tried this model, or should I just go for the 50D?
Timing is everything.
I was seriously considering the Stratus 30 but with a total NRR of 30 dB I didn't think it was worth the US$400 plus (If you get the XT model with a rechargeable battery it's over US$500.)Anyone tried this model, or should I just go for the 50D?
You should always get suspicious when the manufacturer seems reluctant to break down the passive versus active noise reduction. In the case of the Stratus 30 you have work hard to find it, but Pilot Shop publishes the numbers http://www.pilotshop.com/stratus-30-p-2 ... af9b647ec6 Turns out PNR for this model is a mediocre 20 dBs and ANR an unimpressive 10 dBs. Now they might make for a dynamite combination in this model, but somehow I doubt it.
Considering you can get a cheap passive headset that's already close to a 30 NRR for half the price (The Lighspeed QFR Solo claims 28 dBs) I'm not sure it's that great a deal.
For $300 more you can get the 50D model which, as advertised, has a 50 dBs in total NRR. I ended up with a Bose X, but my second choice would have the Stratus 50D for sure.
The only other caveat I would offer is to remember that the NRR number is always something of a marketing gimmick based on perfect lab conditions, but it's the only measure we've got to compare headsets without trying them all (tough to do if you don't have some giant aviation outlet in your area that carries several brands).

I have a 50D and tried the 30 briefly, and IMHO the 50D is far superior. If you are going to do any amount of flying spend the money! I had a CFI who had significant hearing loss from flying around in military aircraft with no hearing protection. You only get one set of ears, protect them. I was on a short commuter hop in a beaver as a passenger and still wore my headset, not to look cool, mind you I did, because I did not want to have a ringing in my ears after. The ringing BTW means that you have suffered irreparable hearing loss.
