Question for all you experienced piston guys

Post by Wrenchy »

Hello, , my question is in regard to a propeller overspeed on a piston engine with a constant speed prop. if the prop goes over about 800-1000 rpm past the red-line (for quite a while) does it just hurt the prop-gov or will there be engine damage too? And if so, what is the proper course of maintenance action. thanks to all who reply.

Some of the homebuilt crowd has been over revving smaller piston engine for quite a while. There is a competition where the objective is to go as fast as you can with an O-200 aircraft. The engine must remain stock (although most would tear it down and at least balance it) The racers get more power by over revving the little engines... above 3000 from what i have read in the past.

Since those engine are balanced, they can probably withstand over revving allot better then stock engines would. If you have a stock engine that has been over revved by 800-1000, personally, I would be worried. It's probably worse with the more powerful engines.
