C-46 wreck at Southampton Island?

Post by RuudLeeuw »

Hello,
recvd following and would like to know if some wreckage remains there (or any other details..):

"there is a C-46 on Southampton Island, three miles off the end of the runway, I walked out to it in 1964 when I was a Radio Operator in Coral Harbour, NWT. I'm not sure if I have a couple of pictures of it, if so, you are welcome to have them."

I think you are talking about the Lamb Air Cargo C-46 "Miss Piggy" in Churchill. It's about 3 miles off the button of rwy 15.

There's nothing around Coral Harbour. Except maybe the impressions in the ground of an old WWII base. I've never seen or heard of a crash site out there.

Here's pics from both end of Coral

There was a wreck to be seen about 10 miles north of Coral; I haven't seen it for some time. Probably been scavenged pretty good by now. I'll ask around.

You can googlemaps Coral Harbour and Churchill on satellite mode and be able to zoom in quite a ways. Below is the C-46 in Churchill. Couldn't find anything around Coral

There was also the wreckage of a yellow airplane south of Deep Bay on the south end of Reindeer lake. I used to see it all the time but the last time I was any where near there (1970's) it was gone. No lake or road nearby so no scavengers could be around.
Some one said it was an RCAF or ex RCAF Anson.
During the building of the Mid Canada radar line and the DEW line, there were lots of airplanes that run into grief and were just abandoned

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Please remember that all wrecked military aircraft, even if they date back to World War II, are the property of their owners. Do not scavenge from them, or you can be charged with theft of government property.

Probly want to look where the old coral runway was, as well as SNAFU.

Try googling Circa Lake west of Hall Beachhttp://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Roche+Bay,+NU&ie=UTF8&ll=68.552351,-82.795715&spn=0.061513,0.31929&t=h&z=12&om=1

Or Hall Lake:http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&g ... &z=14&om=1

Or just south of Isaachsen:

There is wreckage of an Aztec about 10 north of Coral, pretty much the tallest hill on a direct track from Repulse to Coral.[/img]

For Top Gear fans, that last C-47 that JC posted above appears to be the one that Clarkson and May come upon in the episode where they drive to the magnetic pole.

About half way through this clip: http://youtube.com/watch?v=xIetPWfKuCg

"Goose", I think I know the difference between Coral and Churchill, having been stationed in YYQ for 7 years, transferred before the"Pig" went in. Now I will have to dig around for the pictures, but unfortunately they will likely be on slides and will have to figure out how to convert them to paper photos. And just for the record there was at that time 1964, a DC3 off the side of the runway in YZS, put there by oldtimer, Charlie Webber. Probably all have been carried away as scrap, was a big clean up of barrels and abandoned vehicles and such in early 70's and shipped out.

Here's some more info on that Isachsen wreck:
http://www.oldwings.nl/content/c47_yic/c47.htm

Apparently it crashed on takeoff possibly overloaded and with ice on the wings. No injuries.

I have way too much free time.

I worked FSS up in YZS for 13 months. For the life of me I can't really remember when. I want to say 1988 or 1989. I guess I had too good of a time up there. I seem to remember there are two wrecks that we triked out to. A C46 and a DC3. I also remeber people talking about a PA31 up there too. I'm still a newbie with this picture stuff. I'm trying to attach some pictures that I have taken. I think the last two are of the C46. When the spring melt comes, you could not get to the aircraft. They were almost under water.

WOXOF38, yep that's them or rather what's left of them. The Transair 3 had a Radio Operator on board going in for summer relief outa Churchill. Due wx, they ended up off the runway, and old Sven who weighed in about 250, torn the seat belt out and cut up his face some. When came time to leave he wouldn't get back on an airplane and came out by sealift ship. The C46 I believe belonged to Arctic Wings and it too was a wx related accident, to low on inbound, apparently no one seriously injured, but the tail section had broke off and swung around 180 degrees. I always figured that the big fat belly on the 46 saved a lot of lives by absorbing the impact. One dark and stormy night had a Nordair DC3 inbound as all alternates were WOXOF, he actually got lined up on the runway edge lights in the snow, once stopped they got out and nobody went anywhere for 3 days, took up another day to dig the bird out, but no damage, got her started and fueled and on her way. Still looking for my pictures.
