A True Bush Pilot
A friend of mine just proposed to his girlfriend on a pop and chip haul up to Sandy Lake.

Times and morals were different then but one of the more popular proposals in the 60's was "YOUR WHAT???"
But when I proposed to Lillian, it was a very romantic time. We were freeing to death in my old Studebaker and decided to go to her place.
So it was a case of "Marry me before I freeze to death."
That was in November 1964 and we are still together but we do not freeze to death any more.
Cuddling shares warmth.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

I had to make a choice between the bush, airlines or corporate and be away from home a lot or something else because I had 4 kids to raise so I found a sort of half flying, half other job that paid well but kept me at home in Lethbridge. Now that the kids are all grown up, I am too old to hit the road again so I became a freight dog. Early mornings but I sleep in my own bed. Family came first with me.
If I had it to do all over again , I would have been less a true blue dependable employee and more of a me first person but family would still come first.
But if you met my wife and kids, you would see why they came first.

Oldtimer.. You have my most utmost respect.
Family first. We work to live.. we don't live to work.
I'll be the first to admit that I love what I do and i've given up a lot of opportunities and such to play the flying game. But when it comes to family.. thats all I've got!! I'd go to the end of the world for any one of them. Most recently I had to make that choice.. It sucked as I walked away from a fun spot... but I might not have gotten the chance to ever see someone again.. and I didn't want to take that risk.
Relationships ruined by aviation for me so far = 7.. and counting!

Me thinks it was a brightly coloured Navajo, and me also thinks it was about time!Flybaby wrote:A friend of mine just proposed to his girlfriend on a pop and chip haul up to Sandy Lake.

The best wedding gift of all would be now to get her out of YRL

how do I rate? I proposed in the middle of a week long canoe trip into the bush, and she had just finished complaining about how many mosquito bites were on her ass... I proposed soon after, and the next day, she knocked my brand-new $150 fishing rod overboard in 130 feet of water... I thought long and hard, but married her anyways.
