Yet another oxygen thief with a keyboard... And this statement really galls me:
Some of the people in my neighbourhood came here to escape warplanes.

THAT FREAKING NEIGHBOURHOOD IS SAFE BECAUSE WE HAVE OUR OWN WARPLANES TO PROTECT YOUR ****** *** FROM THOSE WHO WISH TO DO HARM TO YOU AND THOSE WHO LIVE THERE!

Another one:
The warplanes undid, in mere seconds, all the precious peace of mind I earned while walking along a white-sand beach. I'll take gannets over Snowbirds any day of the year.
YOU DESERVE A SMACK IN THE HEAD! YOU DIDN'T EARN YOUR PEACE BY WALKING ON A BEACH! YOU GOT YOUR PEACE THROUGH THE SELFLESS EFFORT AND SACRIFICE OF THE MEN AND WOMEN IN UNIFORM! BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN HAVE DIED TO ENSURE THAT YOU CAN LIVE IN PEACE!

I however do thank him for reminding me that there are people in this world that need a ass-kicking every now and then... he just made it on that list... :x

Another maggot with a keyboard typing out drivel like this in my newspapers and I will have a cerebral aneurysm...

I can only guess form the name Fiorito that he is of italian descent. How many of his neighbours fled from savoia marchettis', caproni or the messerschmitts, focke wulfs of the italian governments ex allies

Andrew -
Numbers are no argument...
thousands of people enjoyed smoking in public at one time.

Sir: are you trying to somehow imply that an
annual airshow is a significant cause of lung
cancer, as cigarette smoking undoubtably is?

Comparing the two is absurd.

I think we - as current and former Toronto residents -
can both agree that Toronto has over the years
degenerated into a cesspool not worthy of human
habitation, and that if one was to objectively prioritize
Toronto's problems, the CNE airshow would not make
it onto the top 1000 list.

Why not use your energy and writings in a more useful
and constructive fashion, to address real and solvable
problems that Toronto faces?

The guy is obviously dead wrong from our perspective, but Hedley... I'm not sure youre making the point with stuff like this: "I think we - as current and former Toronto residents - can both agree that Toronto has over the years degenerated into a cesspool not worthy of human
habitation
"

Obviously he does not agree, else he wouldn't be one of it's residents.

My point was that Toronto has problems - serious problems - and the airshow wasn't one of them.

Uh huh, you can read the wing markings on pretty much any aircraft when they are at circuit altitude. This guy is a dink.

Hey that is just another POS living in the southern end of Toronto who thinks that the world revolves around him. Air show and CNE have been around long before he was there......but I guess cause he don't like it, it should stop...........KISS my ASHphalt bung hole! I live in Toronto and i think the air show is great i think we should expand the island airport! I love Porter being there. I love my home but i can't stand these stupid ass people with there self serving opinions about how Toronto should change to better serve them. Research your purchase if you dont like it don't buy it or MOVE.

Sounds like a great location!
Maybe he could have show his kids something about aviation.
Or maybe he is one of those people who hates kids because they make too much noise.

He's not seeing aircraft in the circuit, and he doesn't live near the airport. I worked in his neighbourhood for years and saw many airshows from that vantage point. I repeat, the ONLY air show aircraft that fly low over Parkdale are the Snowbirds, and they only do it when they are rejoining the formation after a maneuver. I would bet a week's pay he never saw any aircraft low enough to read the registration that wasn't a Snowbird. Show centre is the Toronto fireboat out in the lake south of Ontario Place, and all the routines take place out there. Miles away from Parkdale.

My point was that an aircraft doesnt have to be straffing you just to read its wing markings.

True enough. And mine was that this guy is pretending his neighbourhood is overflown by low flying aircraft during the entire air show, and it's just not so. He gets the odd Snowbird and that's it.

I did, however, want to make the point that he's not one of these waterfront condo dwellers who moved in next to an airport and are now complaining. His neighbourhood isn't affected by operations from YTZ and they've never complained about the airport to my knowledge. Actually, Parkdale predates the airport by about a hundred years.

Best location in Toronto to watch the air show is the nude beach at Hanlan's Point on the Toronto Island. But don't drop the soap if you go there..

He wouldn't even notice. The ambient noise would drown out a Cessna no problem. We used to go up on the roof during the air show, and the Snowbird solos would whiz by in complete silence, you wouldn't hear them until they were half a mile away and into their climb over the lake. It was very cool to watch jets go by at 1000 ft without a sound.

Hey Joe maybe the bird crashed into your car window due to the intense gravitational pull that only Torontonians have; owing to the fact, of course, that the world revolves around them (how it manages to revolve around each one of you, individually, is a mystery).

Ever think for a minute that it is those very airplanes, warplanes indeed, that have made it possible for there to even exist a place on earth where it is safe to live? Get a life buddy. The airshow is a display of technology, human skill, training, capability, and precision. And there is a hell of a lot more to it than warplanes...if you actually cared to look.

-------------------------------------------------------

Mr. Fiorito.

I read with considerable dismay your column advocating the banning of the
CNE airshow. Disregarding the fact that I fundamentally disagree with your
premise, I found your lack of accuracy and facts quite disturbing.

Firstly, it is highly unlikely that 'fighter planes rattle windows and set off
car alarms'. I was staying in Toronto this past weekend, and came specifically
to see the show, and was staying in the Cabbagetown area. I spent a lot of time
walking down Parliament Street, and along Front and Queen, all of which are staging areas
for all of the high-performance military aircraft. Several times over the weekend, the F-22 Raptor, the F-16 and the F-18 displays passed overhead, and not once did any car alarms get set off by their flight.

Further, your assertion that 'it is a waste of human life' is completely ridiculous. The CNE airshow has had an exemplary safety record. The Canadian Warplane Heritage lost its Fairey Firefly in 1977, the Snowbirds lost pilot Shane Antaya in 1989, and in 1995, the RAF lost a Nimrod. That's one fatal accident *per decade*, and due to strict safety regulations, not one spectator has ever been injured during the show.

From your own paper, twelve people died over the long weekend in automobile
accidents, surpassing the number of fatalities during the last three decades of the CNE airshow.
Statistically, it is infinitely more dangerous to travel to the airshow than to actually watch it.

Further, your suggestion that 'it is a pornographic illustration of the grim utility of modern weapons of war'. Is also far from the truth. During the three-hour show, only three current combat aircraft appeared .. an F-18, an F-16 and an F-22, and while I personally didn't care for the rah-rah, jingoistic commentary provided for these performers, they were far outnumbered by many wonderful aerobatic displays such as John Mohr's Stearman, Patty Wagstaff's Extra, Manfred Radius' graceful Salto sailplane, a flypast by the Canadian Air Cadets, and by one
of Porter's Q400 aircraft. And, of course, the Snowbirds were the highlight of the show, performing a breathtaking routine in aircraft that should have been in museums years ago.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but given that you have a much larger stage and audience than most, I would think it would be incumbent on you to at least attempt to back your view up with some semblance of facts or statistics. To the thousands who attended the show this past weekend, it was a lovely afternoon. I left inspired by the talents of the pilots,
in awe of the beautiful aircraft and grateful that I could spent a fine afternoon with friends watching a great airshow. Your suggestion that the airshow should be banned is, in my opinion, ill-informed, irresponsible and patronizing to those thousands who enjoy
the show year after year.

you are easily disturbed.
fact: planes few overhead, and car alarms went off up and down my block.
fact: snowbirds have a lousy record.
fact: even one warplane is pornographic.

Excellent post, Chris.

I pointed out to Mr. Fiorito that the Molson Indy was far more disruptive and dangerous to his community than the air show, and his response was that it should be banned too.

Thanks.

Christ on a crutch, why the hell does the Toronto Star employ such a bonehead? I can only pray that he, and people like him are in a tiny minority in Toronto.

For what it's worth, here's my reply to his reply ..

------------------------------------------

Chris -
you are easily disturbed.

Actually, I'm not. I wasn't disturbed at all by anything other than the rampant ignorance displayed in your column.

fact: planes few overhead, and car alarms went off up and down my block.

Did one cause the other? Car alarms go off on my block many times per week, and I don't live anywhere near an airport.

fact: snowbirds have a lousy record.

Define 'lousy'. The fact is that the Snowbirds have an excellent safety, and reliability record. In nearly forty years of performance they've had only a handful of accidents, and even fewer mechanical failures.

fact: even one warplane is pornographic.

This is not a fact. This is an opinion. Specifically, *your* opinion. Misguided, wrongheaded and ignorant though it may be, it is still an opinion, to which you are entitled.

Yours,

Chris Story
