Anyone gone through the process of getting a background check with these guys? I'm going to the USA for sim training (over 12,500) and it's a requirement to get fingerprinted and screened.

Any tips/advice???

Seriously though, it is a pretty straight forward process- just takes time and money for a rather pointless exercise.

Try to get the fingerprinting done as far as possible before your sim date. It can take a bit of time to process, and you don't want to get down there only to find out you haven't been approved. Bad for finances, good for your frequent flyer account.

As a Canadian the fingerprinting process can be a pain in the butt.The only authorized fingerprint collector in Canada as of this last April was in at Dorval.The other option is to cross the border to a US Sheriffs station to get them done there. Depending on your status it can take as long as 30 days after the fingerprinting to get approved.In my case it took 3 or 4 days. Good luck.

There are 3 locations for fingerprinting in Canada now. Montreal (Dorval), Toronto (Scarborough) and Edmonton (Leduc). When you get to that step in the process, you will be provided the website with all the details. The providers are not always available. You will have to make arrangements with them once you get approval to get fingerprints done. And be prepared to have spent about US$280 plus whatever the fingerprinter charges at that point. When you have the finger prints done, make sure anything you don't fill out your self you check over. They guy who did mine filled out a part of my name wrong. Then when you send it (probably by FedEx) track it on the net. If you haven't received authorizeation within a day or two after them receiving your finger prints email the help desk. If you do go to the states to have it done take american cash. ($75 i belive). If you haven't heard back and are getting near your date, contact Flight Safety (or Simuflight or whoever) they deal with these people all the time and can speed things along.

heres how I did mine..

Step 1, go here...

sign up and fill out that sucker. you will haveto upload/fax license and passport. 130 smakeroos

then go here to see whos closest to you in Canada for fingerprints...

You will haveto PRE ENROLL and you will need an AFSP Training Request #, which you get from step 1. Thats another 150 canuck pesos.

then make an appointment for prints and giver. THIS WHOLE PROCESS TAKES TIME so put down the cheetos and turn off the TV if your training is coming up.

Make sure you get fingerprinted so they can identify your ashes as you slam into the Sears Tower in Chicago like they told you to in the Microsoft Flight Simulator tutorial.

Make sure you COLOR scan and send your passport photo. This has been a headache for many a pilot.

Oh and definetly dont call and bug them or it will take longer

As I am the original poster, and I have now gone thorugh the whole process of being cleard by the TSA and finished training:

Follow the instructions.(period) http://www.flightschoolcandidates.gov/ it's very simple. There's no way Canada could ever make it as quick and efficient as the U.S. does.

Just did it too. Not too hard, just time and money. Had problems with the documents becuse I tried to fax them instead of just scanning them from the get go. When I scanned them and sent them by email they got them right away.

As far as fingerprints go, I did mine in Montreal at the flight safety office. Made an appointment in advance. The lady there was great. It took about half an hour tops, and she sends them right away by scanner. No FedEx required.

Total costs for the process were US$130.00 processing fee for TSA and US$149.00 when you pre-register for the fingerprints.

I was in the Category 1 and could have had to wait up to 30 days to get approval for training...I got final approval two to three days after my fingerprints were taken.

A word of caution, DO NOT go for fingerprints until you get the email from the TSA telling you to get them.
