Beijing PanAm International Aviation Academy

I am wondering if anyone can tell me about this company through personal or relative experience, as a flight instructor.

This would include things such as the licence and medical conversions, living conditions, hours one could expect to fly within the initial contract, and any other relevant information.

All is greatly appreciated.

I know you can only have one child. And if it's female, you are pretty much expected to drown it. The only way I'd want to see China, is through the bomb sights of a B52.

I've been around long enough to remember T Square, and some of the other crap that country's government has pulled. Look up some history kids...then defend them.
Remember the "cold war"? China will be the next "Evil Empire".
I was going to back and edit my remarks, not all that PC, and all. Then, I got to thinking (don't do that too often) in this day of PC, why are we even dealing with a country that has almost no civil rights? Because they have money?

Tiananmen Square, April 15-June 4, 1989. June 3, '89, several hundred people were murdered by Chinese troops for staging a peaceful, student let protest. Tanks rolled through the streets, and troops murdered several hundred. Google it. Then, head over to China....fill yer boots.

And, we give them the Olympics! Must have got the IOC members laid?

I was there for a while. I can tell you it is one of the worst possible places to try and be a flight instructor in the world, and a terrible company to work for, in my opinion of course.

But hey, don't just take my word for it:

Doc, Clunck, you have to see China! Yes, their government is twisted, but I would love to see more of it. I trained some Chinese crews and they were super people; I've seen Hong Kong and Macau on a cool trip I did around some of Asia (like landing in Victoria and saying "I've been to Canada") and the country is wild and bizarre! You don't have to adopt one of them (although a friend of mine adopted a little girl) but you shouldn't confuse really interesting people with a f*cked up government.

for many reasons this school is a mess, nothing to do with China
I agree.

My troubles in China were not with the Chinese... They were with the 'Americans' who seemed to think they could plant Arizona in the most polluted part of China!

When the company was formed, Shijiazhuang was picked as being near to Beijing... They had visions of having a flying club too...
But the westerners should have done their homework, looked at the weather/pollution problem and given the unknowing Chinese better advice.

In a better location the school could have thrived.
It had recruited some very talented instructional staff... But the best people in the World suffer SAD, living in the dire pollution in a filthy environment...

Patrick was a good man, he did his homework on Baotou, got all the weather stats, and a move to open a new base besides the Gobi desert was made.
Baotou is now the school's main base.
If I had been based at Baotou from the start I might not have given my notice...
The new boss from Texas with his terrible attitude did upset me terribly however, he chose to increase my stress... But that's something else, and now he has gone.

IMHO Baotou is a very livable place, and I hope the start of a successful period for the company.
I hope the wounds of Shijiazhuang do heal in time.

There so many other "livable" places in the world. China? No thanks.

Operating a flight school near a major city should work after all is not Biggin Hill as close to London as the Pan Am school is to Bejing. Many major cities have flight schools .czbb for example.
There must be many benefits to that location that have not been exploited yet .

After all when they have finished training they will not be flying out of the Gobi desert but out of busy dirty airspace all around the world .Why not master flying in it .

Did you get to visit any Shoalin temples while there ?? an excellent opportunity to improve ones Gung -Fu

2R what you fail to realise is the thickness of the pollution around Shijiazhuang.
It is highly dangerous to one's health.
I walked slowly to the school most days. Effort meant deep painful choking gasps.

England enacted the clean air act in the 1960's.
Biggin Hill does not suffer any pollution in comparison to China's industrial north.
If you watched the recent womens football matches in Beijing, you might have noticed how difficult it was to see across the stadium.
When the Chinese are burning whatever they can to stay warm in their uninsulated brick sheds in the winter, it is a lot worse.

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.
