Helicopter Crashes Near Postville
October 3, 2007


The top Inuit Community Government official in Postville says residents are in deep shock. Keith Decker says a helicopter involved with the exploration business crashed near the community this morning. Decker declined to comment on whether there were fatalities.RCMP officers and a Cormorant out of 5 Wing Goose Bay are en route to Postville.

Unsure about company (NFLD & LAB Helicopters)
At least 1 passed away.

I hate to see the cormorant take off & never want to see it again.

Crews rush to scene of Labrador chopper crash

Police and search and rescue crews were sent to a community on Labrador's northern coast following a report of a helicopter crash.

A Cormorant helicopter was dispatched from Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay and arrived early Wednesday afternoon.

Details on the crash in Postville were not immediately clear, RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Wayne Powell said.

The Halifax-based Search and Rescue Co-ordination Centre, which is overseeing the mission, said one person was aboard the helicopter.

The RCMP has also sent a plane and boat.

The sole occupant of a civilian helicopter was killed Wednesday in a crash on Labrador's northern coast.

Search and rescue officials say the helicopter crashed after taking off from a refuelling pad near Postville.

The pilot was aboard a Newfoundland Helicopters chopper that had been working for a uranium exploration company.

RCMP said the helicopter was on fire before it landed in water near Postville.

Search and rescue officials had dispatched a Cormorant helicopter, while RCMP sent a police plane and a vessel.

The deceased occupant has not been identified. The remains are being sent to St. John's for an autopsy.

One person has been killed in a helicopter crash near Postville, Labrador. RCMP Sgt. Wayne Newell says a body has been recovered from the crash scene and will be taken to St. John's for autopsy. Newell says the helicopter caught fire shortly after it went down around 10:30 am, about 400 metres from the government wharf in Postville. The helicopter is extensively burned, and appears to be intact. The aircraft was owned by Newfoundland Helicopters Limited in Clarenville and had been contracted to the Bayswater Uranium Corporation. The top Inuit Community Government official in Postville says residents are in deep shock. Keith Decker says debris was spread out around the crash site. An RCMP boat and plane are on the scene, along with a military Cormorant helicopter. Sgt. Newell says Transportation Safety Board officials are also investigating.

Narrative: A Canadian registered Bell 206 was taking off and contacted a slung load (Tidy tank -- fuel transportation) which was arriving at Postville under another helicopter. The Bell 206 crashed into the water and caught fire. The pilot is deceased. The second helicopter landed without further incident. The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) will be deploying to the scene. TSB Evaluating.
