AIR CHINA 738 near overshoot!
Asking a pilot about what he thinks of Transport Canada, is like asking a fire hydrant what does he think about dogs.
Doesn't look like he had enough flap selected? Reminds me of that awful crash of a 37 into the Potomac because the epr system was iced up and nobody thought to firewall the thrust levers.
"Thrust set''
"Airspeed alive"
"80 knots crosscheck"
"WTF"
"Reject"
"Oh, by the way, there's a typhoon at destination..."
Remind me to choose China Airlines next time, or at least let the pax do their own walkaround.

"What's it doing now?"
"Fly low and slow and throttle back in the turns."

THEICEMAN this video by the way has nothing to do with overshooting. I know with your vast experience you are well aware of the difference between a late rotation and an overshoot. Nice job on trying to test all of us. Keep up the outstanding work!
Rectum, damn near killed 'em
I said near overshoot! Not overshoot! That's the title of the youtube video.....i'm sorry but a couple more feet and he was on the grass!
o.k. this has got to stop! Now people are just looking for reasons to attack me!

Thought "overrun" might be more appropriate but after a sec thought that it would be more appropriate to landing. Whaddaya call it when you put 'er into the rhubarb on the t/o roll with power on anyway?THEICEMAN wrote:I said near overshoot! Not overshoot! Nonetheless, scary indeed. Capt and FO airspeed showing different values? Can you say ....REJECT!

Ummm correct me if i'm wrong... but the airplane in the video had a China Airlines paint job. As much as I'd love to bash Air China right now, it wasn't their airplane. Maybe you'd better just stick with Singapore Airlines.Remind me to choose China Airlines next time, or at least let the pax do their own walkaround.

Actually, I meant it sarcastically, but I can see why it didn't read correctly. A large crack and then that 'interesting' departure...
What are your sops? 80 knots crosscheck - would you abort for instruments that are not in agreement?
And what was that comment, they decided to return to the airport as there was a typhoon at their destination - pre-flight, anyone?

The majority of takeoffs in the NG's are flap 1.There is no slats only option. If you select flap 1,2 or 5 the trailing edge flaps extend to the selected position, the leading edge flaps fully extend and the slats move to the extended position.Beyond flap 5 the slats move to the fully extended position. Not speculating on what happened, just adding to the discussion that they had at least flaps 1 set.

Can't speak for the Classics but, for the NG's, the takeoff flap setting is a range.Could be from 1 to 15.In almost two years on the airplane, the vast majority of the takeoffs i have done have been flap one.I coud probably almost count on one hand (2 for sure) the number of flap 5 takeoffs i have done.Haven't done a flap 15 t/o...yet!C-GGGQ wrote:well the slats were down a bit so it was at least flap 1, however i was under the impression that flap 5 was take off setting. If they had NO flaps on they never would have pulled her off the ground

When would you use flaps 15? Short runway? Heavy load? Captain?

Hmm?Not sure why you don't see spaces? They are there!!At least on my screen they are.
Flap 15 t/o...short rwy, hot, heavy.Might even be a packs off t/o under those conditions with the apu used for bleed air.
