Well, thanks guys. I appreciate the pep talk. It is a hard decision because I am pretty much swapping from one airline to another, one for one. So, now I must decide, upgrade where I am now and live through the crappy commute or move to Jazz. Either way, thanks for the info.

skyhigh wrote:estimates are closer to 7 yrs for upgrade in YYZ/YUL on the dash.....even though people are leaving, the current Captains aren't going anywhere except for retirements, which aren't really happening too much in the future. Of course those numbers will change if Jazz expands and adds more A/C.
Here are some numbers I dug up on upgrades. This is as per the latest bid in July 07.

Most Junior Capt hired in late 2000. He will be on line Jan 08. However he is only 50 Sen. numbers above the most senior newhire (post CCAA, Hired Sept 2005). Keep in mind that Jazz never hired a soul between 2001 and 2005. Hence that is why upgrades took so long.

Lots of Captain have quit and gone to Sunwing. Others to Cathay, Emirates, etc. Not to mention there are around 80-100 forzen guys to go to mainline, including some Captains. Plus many fo's gone to WJ, AT, etc...

There are still a lot of Senior FO's who now can hold a Captain spot and will no doubt be taking upgrades in the next coming bids. If things keeps going the way they are going......Upgrades could be in the 3.5-4 year mark as opposed to 6-7 years.........but I am being optmistic.

Now on the pay issue.

I agree, we will never make as much as our mainline couterparts or WJ. Nor do I expect to. What gets me is that their payscale blows ours completey out of the water. WJ 3rd year fo makes more than our junior Captains, Even a 3rd mainline EMB FO makes more than any Jazz FO ever will. We are getting CCAA wages, company is no longer in CCAA.

We should not compare ourselves to our American couterparts. I think the pay at a Regional level in the US insulting. 21K for an RJ FO, 50K for a Capt.......WTF. You can make more flying a PC-12 up North.

I think that if they could raise the FO wage to a more respectable level after say the 3rd or fourth year, then Jazz would be an amazing place to be. As it is the only reason people are leaving. (my opinion)

It is to hard to live in these cities YVR YYC YYZ even YUL, with a family on the wages. The working conditions are great otherwise and in the long term I think that would probably be better for the company if they could hold on to there pilots for their whole carreer as opposed to the revoving door we have now.

Although I don't know the real story, only management does.

Biggest positives about Jazz (can't believe no one has mentioned these!!)

1- No wing covers to put on
2- No engine tents or plugging in oil and battery heaters
3- No pulling the plane out of the hanger at 3am in a snowstorm at -40
4- No loading baggage
5- At the end of the day you are in the van to the hotel in 10 min
6- Did I mention no wing covers to put on...

Every company has its good and bad points. In my experience at Jazz the good outweigh the bad.

Excellent points BC. Jazz is umpteen times better than the stuff we had to deal with at our previous jobs. Jazz is a first class operation in all ways in comparison!!!

One of the things I'm most excited about is a decent pension with lifetime travel benefits for my wife and I.
I can't wait to retire.
