Porter Pilots and the Q400

Post by invertedattitude »

With the recent turn of events at SAS, what has been the talk around the Porter shop about the Q400? Has the maintenance changed much?

Business is brisk, as usual. Our maintenance has not changed, they've been doing a great job since day 1.
Porter's done all the recommended inspections, regardless of how few cyles the a/c have, and have found no faults.

I've found the airplane to be very reliable and very enjoyable to fly; and I sincerely don't understand how one airline can have so many related problems with the same system in such a short time frame.
(keep in mind, the Japan incidents were user maintenance problems and the Korean incident was, well, apparently just a very mishandled landing)

ps. ...personally I haven't thought twice about my contract, I am however still deciding what to do with my first profit sharing cheque...

Very glad to hear things are going well at Porter!

I think it's pretty childish for those who have bad things to say about Porter.

I guess you can hate the airline all you want, fact is there's men/women just like those at WestJet/Air Canada just trying to make a decent living finally.

I think Porter stands in a good position to give Bombardier a boost really in light of all of this.

I have a hard time understanding why WestJet/Air Canada pilots give any sort of a thought of animosity towards Porter's pilots.

First of all, I doubt very much you interact with them all that often considering their base of operations, and from what I heard most ATCO's hold Porter crews in a pretty high regard considering the length of their tenure so far. Considering that, I find it hard to believe they've pissed off other airlines through their professional actions, and supporting that there's been zero evidence of it presented here.

I don't understand then what exactly makes people like Flightlevels and others so irritated at their pilots? If it's the actions of Porters managment, what in gods name does that have to do with their pilots exactly?

Flightlevels, I can only assume that either you're new to WJ or you've been there so long that you've forgotten what it's like to be at a new carrier.
If it's the former, I urge you to ask some of the true veterans of the company to remind you of what it must have been like to climb out on a limb and risk their livelihood on the dream to be part of something original, new and untainted. Ask them how much sleep they lost when the naysayers criticised them from the get go... or how much sleep they lost when Transport shut you down for no good reason.

I came to Porter after doing alot of homework, I believe in the idea and I have great respect for the managers who got the company off the ground. If anyone can make an airline succeed, it's them.
For the first time in a long while, I've found a job I love, I've been given great opportunities to learn and contribute something beyond my meager piloting skills.
I am grateful for where I am, and if powers beyond my control conspire to scuttle the airline, of course I'd be extremely disapointed, but I know I'd be a better person from the experience. It's a risk I'm happy to take.

I don't expect any pity from the flying public or from competitors because we're the underdog now. It's just business, and big or small, all airlines will suffer when the next big downcycle begins... and it's only a matter of time. Remember that when next you post trite, belittling comments to fellow pilots.

point, I never started this pissing match, however you assumed so when I put the landing of the Q400 on the board...remember? I'm not stirring the pot only responding to someone who has thin skin and took it as a personal attack. Understandably due to the fact that your credit bureau is sitting with that debt on it. I wish you guys well.

I hear an awful lot of good things about Porter from my downtown TO friends who use them regularly for business. Keep up the good work!

I had a bond at my previous employer and didn't think twice about it as I was committed to staying there for a few years. No big deal.

Glad to hear you got profit share as well. Sounds like a good job.

***edited out one paragraph as a peace offering to my friend, my colleague, my anonymous buddy FLs***

Cheers.

You need to clarify what you are trying to imply here. And don't pretend you are not trying to get into a pissing match when you are throwing around insults and accusations.

Flightlevels,

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here and believe that you have been misinformed. Unlike Jetsgo there is no cash out of your own pocket training bond with Porter. Just an agreement to to pay a pro-rated amount for the training should you choose to leave prior to fulfilling your commitment.

Sure it's in place to discuorage people from taking their rating and leaving. But from what I've seen the majority of us here don't want to leave. We get treated well and enjoy our jobs here.

So I don't think pointyertoes has to worry about his credit bureau report. I'm sure the salary he gets plus the profit sharing check he just recieved gives him a pretty high credit score!!
