Good Sounding Engines
I've read lots of posts about the sound of a radial engine, the larger the better and how they sound and I totally agree.
How about the sound of a mororcycle. Id like to put forward the sound of a Shovelhead as being up there with a radial.
Rice burners not in the picture!! Some Brit iron ok but nothing sounds like a Shovel

The 1340 on the front of a norseman sounds pretty rockin! I love the beavers 985.. so long as they don't have the anemic sounding 3 bladers on 'em
The 2.5L turbocharged chryco motor in the project car sounds pretty wild at idle.. Mind you.. it has a 3.5inch dump tube right off the t3/4 hybrid ball bearing turbo
As for motorcycles.. gimme a duc! Such a delicious sound!!

I'm sorry but in the motorcycle world the Honda VFR800 V-4 tops my list. It sounds like a 70's muscle car that will rev out to 10 grand.
The M-18 sounds just as good as any other big radial. I personally have never heard anything that sounded as cool as 12 Dromaders idling waiting to take off in the morning. 12,000 radial horse power has nice rumble to it.
I could hear his engine over mine, once the vent window was opened to take the photo.

The Honda V4 sounds clean and smooth, we're talking loud and dirty.
Havn't heard the RR and Merlin V12's for a bit but used to go to Seattle for the hydroplane races and yes they sound good.
So its agreed the Shovel has it??
Cat when you do the Europe war bird show have you come across the twin prop Corsair? Flown by a French pilot Eric.

Call me a heretic, but the V-12 Merlin never really did much for me.
Similarly, the radial engines are cool at idle, but at an airshow, the
Sukhois with their radial engines sound a lot like a tractor. The scream
of an over-revved Lycoming, with the prop tips supersonic during
multiple snap rolls, spins my crank.
Probably my favorite engine sound was the 12-cylinder Lamborghini
Diablo that Bobby had, with an aftermarket Stebro exhaust. It was
a mechanical orchestra - a symphony of overlapping valves.

Another great-sounding engine was the RC51 which was a 90-degree
one liter twin cylinder sportbike, with the full Akrapovic exhaust. Like
the Ducati, nothing else sounds like it. I went out for a ride with some
friends that weren't familiar with the RC51 and one guy told me, "It
sounds like a Harley on meth".
As you might expect, I kinda like the sound of this:

You can actually hear the wind in the wires.

Sure a big radial or V8 sound great at idle, but even a super bike can't beat this

The engine sound does not have to be loud to be good, you should have seen the look of ecstasy on my girlfriends face with the low buzz sound of her vibrator.
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Best sounding aircraft engine:
The Daimler-Benz 601.
Which powered one of the greatest fighter aicraft of all time
The ME-109

Video, watch it all to appreciate its beautiful sound, and amazing sounding supercharger!

While the Merlin was great, only hacks of WW2 history think it sounded better
