It's definitely the worst paying job I've had in aviation. Not a bad place to work, but it's tough looking at your bank account when you're ending up in the red every month! My take home is around $2000 per month after a year. Perdiems are around $650-800 a month. You really can't count perdiems as part of your salary as you spend it while you're on the road. Hope this helps for anyone considering a position at Jazz.

JMAD, people like you piss me off. Why did you accept the job at Jazz knowing full well what you were going to be paid?
I'll bet it was because it was one of the best jobs going in this country right now, except the starting salary...I'll concede that.
We have one of the best set of working conditions of all the companies in Canada and even maybe North America, we have a well maintained fleet of acft. some of which are a bit old but well maintained nevertheless. Yes it can take a significant amount of time to make bigger bucks depending what part of the country you reside, but the fact is Jazz is a regional airline and will NEVER pay the type of salaries that Air Canada or Westjet might pay...plain and simple.
You obviously came here because you saw the job as being better than the one you were at, so to now start shouting and screaming how terrible it is is a pathetic display of 'spoiled brat' syndrome. if your eyes were closed when you came here blame yourself, not Jazz.
In the words of a past mamager, "If you don't like it here, leave" so that the rest of us who have decided to make Jazz a happy place where we can be for the rest of our flying careers can do without having to continually hear people like you griping day in and day out.
To you and all like you, "PISS OFF"

Re: JAZZ REFUSES TO PAY ITS PILOTS PROPERLY!!!!!
hey jmadjmad wrote:the MONEY is the biggest joke in the industry......Apparently we are not professionals....We are with the likes of uneducated street sweepers or garbage men, or secretaries....You can make more money delivering Pizza....I make 950 every 2 weeks take home...650 on average/month food allowance...total bullshit....They wonder why there is a max EXODUS of F.O'S at Jazz....They say we have a PILOT SHORTAGE..in the industry...How ABOUT A SELF INFLICTED SHORTAGE BECAUSE JAZZ REFUSES TO PAY PROPER WAGES TO ITS MOST IMPORTANT RESOURSE, ITS DAMN PILOTS!!!!!!!!!THEY WOULD RATHER HIGHER KIDS THEN PAY US PROPERLY! NO ONE WILL COME TO JAZZ....THERE RIGHT THEY DO HAVE A SHORTAGE!!
I 've been working here over a year and when I got hired I knew how
much i'd be making before I started, thats why I don't complain about
the pay.
I guess next time you accept an employment offer you should take a
look at how much the job pays.

The reason people are leaving is because there are greener pastures
at the moment. Air Canada, West Jet, Transat, Skyservice etc.
Once Air Canadas' hiring slows down so will the hiring everywhere else.
I wonder how many peple quit Jazz between 2001 and 2005,besides the
ones that didn't come back from lay off, I bet it wasn't many.
Just my point of view.

Re: naive
Yes it is. It's a group of 3 or 4 regional airlines. And Comair and Skywest do compare to Jazz in size, if not entirely on route structure. And they pay far worse. FO's there start around 20-24K per year.jmad wrote: Its not a regional airline. We fly on every coast, all over Canada and the USA. NAME one company in the states that does that and calls itself a regional.
If you are actually fighting for higher wages for folks at Jazz, good on ya...although this may not be the right medium....if you're just bitching, well, everyone, and I mean everyone and their dog, who has been in Canadian aviation for a few years knows that the pay at Jazz is not ideal. If you didn't, then you can blame yourself for not asking.
My 2 cents....
Whether or not you know the pay at Jazz before you go there is in no way an argument for the awful pay. It may well be a good jump for a guy in terms of what he is currently flying or where he is living etc. but how does the fact that pilots are anxious, ambitious or even desperate to better their resume make it a weapon to pay them nothing?
You guys beat him up for bitching. Does that mean you feel that the pay is reasonable?
Pilots will always go there all the way down to minimum wage to better their resume or location or whatever. So, should the pay then be minimum wage?
What's that you say? He shouldn't have gone? So, he takes a stand against it and 50 other pilots go do it and climb ahead of him in career progression. Wow, he sure took a stand though. What a hero for the pilot population.
For eg, considering how good the pay can eventually get at mainline, should we all be quite happy to put in the first year for free? Maybe the first 2 years?
How have you guys come to accept this? I am blown away.

I agree that the starting wages at Jazz should definitely be higher. I also agree that they are the main reason for the mass exodus to other companies. What I don't agree with is someone coming here knowing full well what the pay is, and then bitching that Jazz is a terrible place to work because of it. If all those other airlines are paying soooo much better maybe someone would be better off to bide their time where they were before Jazz and wait for one of them to call. All of the other airlines hire guys from the same place Jazz does.
I don't think its a stupid question at all. If you had been misled about it then I could understand your anger. If the money is so bad here why did you leave your previous job? You knew the pay but came anyway, hoping that the company would increase our pay 2-3 yrs before our contract comes due out of the goodness of their hearts? I hate to break it too you, but its not going to happen. While I agree that some of us are underpaid, our union signed on the dotted line and we have to live with that until 2009.
It would appear that you came to Jazz knowing full well what you were getting into. If the money is an issue for you, maybe you should have held out for a better job.

Guys, just my input but I personally have never made a job decision based on starting salary or short term planning. I have always considered the long term reward. Maybe it's that kind of thinking that keeps starting salaries low (mea culpa). To tell you the truth I don't even remember those days and somehow I got through it. The long term picture is the important one. It ain't rocket science. And we're not talking too long. If you don't see yourself happy within 3-5 years, I think you made the wrong choice. All this info was given to you when you signed on. If the company you work for does not meet your requirements, do yourself and everyone else a favour and get the hell out of there. And if you're trying to change things, it won't be easy. The AC family has taken a big hit in salary. Still a great place to be in the big picture but you have to be patient. Wether you plan to retire as a an RJ captain or a 777 captain, the job is alot of fun and very rewarding in the long term. It would seem Jazz has become two things. A stepping stone or a great retirement place. Heck, what am I saying, it's ALWAYS been that way. Your choice.

jmad: Jazz is free to fly for whom ever they want, and flying whatever types of planes they want. If they wanted to start up a 777 freighter operation to export your stupidity to the third world they'd be free to.
Do you have any idea what percentage of international airlines use some form of psych or behavioral analysis in their hiring selection? This isn't unique or Air Canada, or even North American interviewing. In fact it's not even specific to aviation, the test is typically used on jobs which involve stress.
