North American reality is that the middle lane is the slow lane and that the right lane is mostly vacant with the rare exception of those very few driving slowly where they do actually belong.I think having cars passing you at high speed on the inside lane is dangerous.
Life is easier and safer in the lane with the least traffic density.
The most hazardous situations on expressways are where slow drivers have monopolised all three lanes and have dozens of cars bunched up tightly trying to thread past them.
Anyway I drive faster than many and slower than not so many. When I'm in the left lane, I keep an eye in the mirror to make sure I'm not blocking people and often add another 10 clicks or so the guy behind can get past, provided of course that I'm not stuck behind a left lane snail.
I do like the faster guys in front. Radar Bait and Radar Block are always welcome.
In the city, I max out 15 km/h over the limit as it seems the local cops don't bother until you're more like twenty over and they have all the business they can handle at 20+ over. Caveat that on a lonely shift with nothing happening, the odd cop will tag somebody at 6 over just for a bit of company.
Tight residential streets and hilly narrow rural roads where a tractor with equipment can pull out from a field behind a hill I do slow down for. I memorise blind farm field exits and have my speed down for them.

I would argue that at times its safer to speed.
Like when you are on the highway and following a pack of idiots riding bumper to bumper for 10 car lengths. That is sketchy, and that is when collisions involve so many cars. I often will speed to get ahead of the mob then go a steady 10 give or take over the limit with no traffic risks around.
People have a right to go slow if they want, but traffic results from the followers either being to chicken to pass or not wanting to pass, but either way not giving enough space for someone else to safety pass and work their way through the mob. Never yell at the slow car at the head of the pack, its the asshole is position 2 thats causing the problem.

AMEN....AMEN TO THAT.Cat Driver wrote:Try living in most of Europe.
I don't see very many accidents there and they sure as hell drive a lot faster than Canadians.
It's all about all you 'phuquos' that just love to sit in the left lane doing 101 KPH.
Do the Universe a favor....move over. Stop trying to play cop...you're only aggravating the situation....move over. People are always going to speed...120 or 150 kph....people are always going to speed...stay to the right unless you intend to pass....it's proper roadmanship...and I think I read somewhere........IT'S THE FURKIN' LAW IN SOME PROVINCES!

Speeding for me depends on which car Im driving. My 1981 Chev work van(250 ci 6 cyl) can barely hold 100 km/h on most inclines in BC, even without my tools in it, so no problems with speeding. My BMW will effortlessly do double that +. Can/has be an issue, but fortunately I don't drive it very often, so no tickets as of yet.

She was killed a few blocks from my house in a 30 zone. It's not just the kids either. The 50 year old Infinity G35 midlife crisis talking on the cell phone crowd are just as dangerous. People just aren't focused on the task of driving anymore. I have nothing against speeding on an open highway in an intelligent and alert way. But, when you get into the residential areas, speeding won't get you where you are going any faster with all the stop signs anyways. And for @#$! sakes If you want to race, do it on a closed circuit. Those kid idots who keep driving super fast are the problem. They are the stats!
One kid here in Mtl took a car out, started driving super fats (he only had a learners permit) & killed a 3 year old girl!

I would add this: I have done a ton of long distance driving (including a full US tour by car) and generally on the cruise I am 15 or so kms over the limit, which is pretty much within the limits accepted by most police forces in most places.
The sad fact in Canada at least is that the police are much more interested in writing easily proven tickets for speeding than they are to write hard to prove left lane obstruction tickets. So we end up in a society mostly petrified to go a reasonable speed for conditions, but with no fear of parking it in the left lane regardless of the lineup of traffic behind them.
Sad, really.

This is a my sig... I hope you like it.
I find peace and tranquility in the left lane doing 120...until I run into buddy doing 96 kms sitting in the left lane and blocking all access around him because he/she has stalled the flow of traffic. Speed does not cause accidents....swurving from lane to lane @ higher speeds is the issue that is induced by those ignorant enough to disrespect other drivers by sitting in the left lane and NOT moving over into the right lane....PERIOD.Rockie wrote:A self induced problem if there ever was one. If some can't apply proper driving habits on the highway...move back to Vancouver, OR anywhere in the States.

Bit of a dangerous game to try an pull out the road rage in a driver. I've seen some people totally lose it and do crazy stuff when antagonized liek that. Do you really want to be either the focal point of their rage or perhaps be one of the cars involved in the accident they cause by their irrational solution to a problem that you may have caused?cpl_atc wrote:When that happens to me, I wait a while and then just turn off the cruise and coast. No braking involved, because I'd rather them not have any warning. "You want to drive faster than me, then pass me, you f'ing pussy!". I don't touch the accelerator again until they pass. 70-80km/h seems to be the breaking point for most people. Usually seems to work.Doc wrote:I set my cruise control for ten over....always. I still get morons riding my bumper.
It's sort of like going up to a large mildly drunk patron in a bar and calling him a loser over and over and not letting him ignore you...good luck with that.
I think I would either hit the gas or kindly pull over to let them get by. Once they are in fron of you you have complete control of the situation again because they won't back hit the front of your car. Some call this defensive driving...find the easiset and safest solution to a situation behind the wheel.
Speed LIMIT should be meaningful.
Right now, the 'LIMIT' is only 'REFERENCE'
I find that 130 would be a good limit on the highways. I would even agree to have photo radars every few kilometers if they raised the limit to 130.
The 100 km/h thing is just a money grab, really. You can pull anyone at anytime. Only very few ever drive at 100 or less..
However, I entirely and fully support residential zone limit of 40/50. I had a kid ride her little scooter right infront of my car once, and if I were going the 'limit+15', I would probably not have enough time to stop.

This topic drives me nuts (pardon the play on words). I'm actually quite calm when I drive..."losing it" @ the wheel is a waste of energy.
People won't change...at least in North America (excluding Quebec) so why should I blow a jug anymore about it. I've accepted the fact that everyone else sucks. LOL Just kidding.
Drive/Fly/Walk safe folks!

It is interesting the opinions mentioned. Glad to see my method of 15 over, on cruise, and keep the left lane free. It is astonishing the number of people on the highways who have no clue about what is happening behind them. Need an enema for a lane change. Middle-laners need to be ticketed.
I favour a 5 year driving test for everyone. Just a tune up and maybe an enforced half hour of driving tuition, where needed.
I just read "Cannonball" and it is quite revealing about high speed driving. If I drive on an open highway at 100, I go to sleep. At 130-140 I am "in the zone" . Everyone has their own zone.
Funniest part of the Cannonball is where a guy, badly fatigued, wakes up and all he can see is a whitish fuzz. Turns out the driver is 4 feet back of a semi....draughting!
Drive safe......even if it's fast!

I stick to 10 over in the city, and usually I'm going 130 on the hwy, and people are passing me. I've only ever been pulled over once, it was Ontario Provincial election night, apparently I was going 60 in a 40, and my driving was "erratic." My driving was fine, I'll confess to the speed, in all honesty I didn't realize that I was in a 40, and ever since I've gone exactly 40 there. I didn't get a ticket that day, must have been my charming smile!

Its good that some people speed.
Because if we all followed the limit there would be some sort of new tax introduced to help pay the cops salaries.
Like......you were following to close or you didnt signal when changing lanes.
help me out guys.what else could they get us on?
