Station60, your opinion is too logical and makes too much sense - it will never work in Canada.

Funny thing is, I never considered this to be "rocket science"?

GPS???

IFR or VFR GPS???IFR enroute or approach approved?? moving map display or old style???? actually trained & certified to do GPS approaches or just doing it anyway cause it's safer??? Strait in or circling??

GPS is a great tool but it should be used properly/legally. It isn't a great effort to actually train your pilots to the legal standard is it???

who cares it lines you up with the centre line every time :smt002 -- and for the aztec driver -- why not -- don't have one installed -- then I can understand -- but if u have -- not using all the tools -- mmmmm -- doesn't matter if it's IFR/approach certified it can still be used as a reference tool -- nothing illegal about that and if you refuse to use it because you think it's illegal well that doesn't make sense either -- use all the tools -- simple

home brew approaches -- how the hell do you think one finds a runway in the arctic when there are no ground based approach aides -- having said that it's all about "local" knowledge and terrain familiarity -- first thing on an ice strip was to get threshold coordinates - confirms runway length and direction -- build a fix that rolls you out on final -- far safer than hanging your head out circling -- in fact circling approaches should be banned --

There is "legal" then there is common sense -- just because you perceive something as "being legal" doesn't necessarily mean it's safe --

Is a GPS more accurate than the ADF for lining up on the centerline?

Another question, on trans oceanic flights would you rather use the HF radio or a Satellite phone?

And way out on the ocean would the GPS be better for staying on track than using the ADF?

There are many strong NDB's that can be received during ocean crossings the last one I used just for the hell of it was on the southern tip of Greenland and we got it with no problem just out of Iceland.

Thirty or forty years ago the NDB's were part of over ocean navigation, GPS has changed all of that.
