Just came back from one of those Yankee gun shows down in the states and I found this little beauty. The scenario is as follows:
The little white fluffy bear is sneaking up on you. You see him and launch the smoke grenade at him there by confusing him. Then you take aim and diddle him with 60 rounds of armor piercing ammo. Skin him and sell the rug to some yank and make your money back used to purchase this little bear gun.
And with one of these around, no Yank will ever ask you to take that last bag of junk like Joe did last year.

If you try to use a 5.56mm on a polar bear, then you deserve exactly what you get. A round that is designed to wound a human rather than kill them will not have all that much effect on a disgruntled carnivore that weighs that much. My money is on a 45-70 if the bear happens to be wearing white.
Great rifle for "economy of scale" when hunting whitetail though.

Please don't tell my mother that I work in the Oilpatch...she still thinks that I'm the piano player at a whorehouse.

I thought I was obvious enough….BUT… for some of our slower readers:
The above was an example of sarcasm.
Sarcasm from Greek sarkasmos, 'to tear flesh' is sneering, jesting, or mocking a person, situation or thing. It is strongly associated with irony, with some definitions classifying it as a type of verbal irony intended to insult or wound[1] — stating the opposite of the intended meaning, e.g. using "that's fantastic" to mean "that's awful". It is used in a humorous manner, often harshly, and is expressed through vocal intonations such as over-emphasizing the actual statement or particular words. Use of sarcasm is sometimes viewed as an expression of concealed anger[2] or annoyance. Sarcasm can also be used situationally for e.g. "the couch is so big" when referring negatively to the fact that the couch is actually small.

Plain stupid ? Holsters are made to carry handguns, plastics cases are made to ship and store it. The 6'' version is legal in Can. The .500 will outperform any handguns for bear defense.Doc wrote:That S&W 500 is just plain stupid! A cute little red suitcase? Not legal in Canada (under 4") and probably $1200 a copy. If you're going to carry an illegal firearm, there are cheaper ways to go. No cop, or game warden, will ticket you for using an illegal firearm, IF you have bite marks on your leg? And a S&W 500 is pretty useless, back in the cabin, in a cute little red suitcase.
Beautiful eh?Doc wrote:I was in SIR in YWG yesterday. I can't help it. I didn't know they were a Kimber dealer. Going to have to get me one of their 1911's in a .40 S&W. Not a "bear stopper", but what a beautiful piece!
I think I might go the same route. Been mulling over getting something in .40. So much range brass available, I need a gun to shoot it!
The Kimber would be an excellent platform for the caliber too. I need a 1911, a classic metal gun, as all I currently have is 'tupperware'
Back on topic, the 12ga Defender vs. 30-30 lever question, I'm with the consensus for the Defender. Besides, a shotgun is more versatile anyhow.
I'm surprised no one has posted this yet.

300 wm has enough power but unless your using a BAR, BPR or BLR they're too slow. Risk Takers on discovery the other day had the wildlife guys in churchill Manitoba using mossberg 500's w/ extended Magazines using bear bangers and slugs and that's good enough for me .

Great Video, with one minute to reload I guess you sure hope you don't miss with the first 30 shots. lol
Didn't seem to have much recoil. Do you think he had a light re-load or is the Automatic action soaking it up?

I call bullshit. For one, grizzlies scavenge and eat stuff they haven't killed. You'll find them around garbage dumps, and hunter's kill sites. I'm picking up some hunters tommorow, they killed two moose, and are only bringing back one because a griz took over one of the kill sites. Also, they recomend playing dead witha grizlie if it is acting defensively. If it is acting as a predator, fight. At least this is what is recommended up here.mellow_pilot wrote:Bored and reading old posts...
Earlier in the thread there is some question as to why more black bear fatalities? Simple fact is that black bears are far more oppertunistic eaters than Grizzlies. A Kodiak will not eat something it hasn't killed (unless it's a salmon it stole form another bear). That's why they tell you to play dead for a Griz.

Just bought one of these the other day. Marlin 1895GS. It'll do the job and with the new Hornady leverevoltion ammo it will funtion as a reasonable mid range hunting rifle.

Not sure if it's just a rumour, but several years back there was a story of an opportunistic Grizzly that would follow the sound of gunshots, and takeover the killsite, including getting an extra 200# meat until, somebody happened to be a little faster getting to the gun during the field dressing.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Winchester 1897.
Exposed hammer. Hold down the trigger and work the slide, and you fling slugs or buck as fast as you can pump.
One of the most devastating weapons of the first world war. The germans considered it's use a war crime.
An original can demand a price, but theres'a chinese norinco knockoff on marstar.
