Same here! After the first, they want to come back again & again!C-GGGQ wrote:My thoughts (and my grandfathers thoughts) exactly. Sad thing about letting kids fly/ being afraid to fly is that I've taking several people flying who were scared and they've all come back down smiling, and saying "wow that was a nicer flight and landing than I've had on a lot of airline flights" I always laugh at that one.
Asking a pilot about what he thinks of Transport Canada, is like asking a fire hydrant what does he think about dogs.
I'm in pretty much the same boat as you. I'm in my last year of high school and have just finished getting my PPL. I plan to get my night rating right away and move on to commericial. Hopefully I will have commericial before university starts next fall - yes I'm going to do engineering too. Having an engineering degree on the resume probably makes you look pretty good to an employer, it also opens up jobs in the aerospace industry. A test pilot pretty much has to have an engineering degree if your not ex-military.
Go for it! It is going to be tough, no question about it but if its what you want than you go do it!
My only suggestion would be to start your training in high school.

It's good to hear there is someone wanting to do the same as me. I am going to get my PPL this summer. It takes about 4-8 weeks apparently, if you do it accelerated. It's not easy, but I will do it. Maybe I should start as of January. It's 6 hours of courses per week, but I will already have other courses as it is. It's no easy feat. But like you said, if I want it, I can get it. Luckily, I have housing covered, LUCKILY, I don't know what I'd do otherwise. I also have to get a little Civic to get TO and from the AIRPORT, and the rest of the training, well, I guess I'll do it gradually. I have 3 whole summers to blitz through it. The night IFR is easily done, the hard ones are the ones that last longer, those will be a pain, but, we both have to be strong. I don't know what bacehlors I am getting yet, but I have about one month and a half to think about it. Probably a business degree as a test pilot is not what I am visioning as a career choice for now! Hehematt777 wrote:I'm in pretty much the same boat as you. Because the sky is the limit...!
Careful! Summer blitz can be dangerous......there is so much for to learn. At the beginning, it's impossible to remember everything. That is why is suggest that you maintain a good pace throughout the year. Flying is a skill that takes time to perfect. Don't let it rest during the winter times!I have 3 whole summers to blitz through it. The night IFR is easily done, the hard ones are the ones that last longer, those will be a pain, but, we both have to be strong.
Night & IFR is different. Night rating permits you to fly VFR at night. 5 hours dual, 5 instruments, 5 dual......
IFR is a different ball-game.
Study hard!

Couldn't agree more... that was my first step, which i passed last week... even before thinking about schools, licenses etc... if you are not sure about getting the medical how can you go about planning your whole career into aviation? only my opinion...You repeatedly worry about failing a medical... How about getting one right away?
Go for it dude!!!!!! Same here... i have a CEGEP (quebec) degree in mechanical eng. which could mean nothing to the airlines... I'm taking a risk and about to plunge into the wonderful world of aviation... hey i used to work in the music business... aviation is nothing compared to the bull****t that goes on in music...No university, just flight training. Soon to be hired as flight instructor. Might do some course later, depends on the competition, but for now, just flight training with high school diploma.
I totally agree with Hedley on this one. Get started early. Get your Class 4 instructor before entering university and you can work as a part time instructor. AC has a few pilots that are working practicing medicine or law or running their own businesses on their off days!Hedley wrote:Why don't people get their pilot licences in high school?
I soloed my kid at 14. He's 15 now, and has almost 200 hours in his logbook. He flew almost every day this summer, twice a day sometimes.
By the time he graduates high school, he'll have his IFR, commercial and class 4 instructor rating. Should look good on his university application for extra-curricular activities.
Only if my family had THAT kind of money.I soloed my kid at 14. He's 15 now, and has almost 200 hours in his logbook. He flew almost every day this summer, twice a day sometimes.

I'll just throw in some words. I currently attend York University, taking full time Kinesiology, play Jr.A hockey, work at part-time job, and of course, flight training. It's all about time management, and as long as you have those skills, it's really not all that hard to do. And btw; I'm still able to go out and have brews with the boys.

Good luck!

Will you shush the fudge up? (Nicely put). It's not because you went through hell that we have to as well. God, that's the "one way thinking scheme", where you tell yourself: oh well just because my life was harder, your's shouldn't be any easier. Wake up man! You're not alone in this world. It's as if immigrants came to Canada and started screaming at you because you live in a good and comfy home whereas they've just spent 2 nights ifWant it or not, I am ultimately sure that at some point connections in the industry are much more pertinent than any training or type rating or magic golden pot University diploma. Of course, we can get those to embelish our applications in different companies, get a good start. The thing that does disturb me the most is the way you react towards people that show amibition, different ways of reaching their goals. It's not because you've reached the end of your tunnel that you must push others further back down in theirs. Anyways, when we'll be out of ours, we'll help y ou out of yours... which looking from here it seems that you'll be stuck in it for quite a while...
cheers!

It's freakin garbage! Talent means nothing these days...it's all about hype & looks...hey i used to work in the music business... aviation is nothing compared to the bull****t that goes on in music...
Even in the underground, it's becoming like that!
Trailer park boy, what's your deal? why the attitude towards everybody? It's just a T.V show!
Why attack Hedley?
Have you heard of something called Ritalin?

I think The Trailer Park Boy's comment was in by far distasteful , I think what was in further dis-taste was the response for Hedley to flaunt his photo's of wealth .
Hedley ...I don't think you'd know the benefits of days work if it come out bit you square in the arse .
Take your photo's and unequivocally shove them as far up your ass to the back of your eyeballs as you can !!!
Don't get me wrong readers of this thread , I spend my days flying the wealthly from coast to coast and have every admiration for their humbleness, ambitiousness and in most cases kindness . However I will not tolerate an arogant Prick .
....Mr. THEICEMAN ......I changed my signature soley on your account as you expressed concerns of them being somewhat synonymous.
Cheers.

Good one Ice Man . I don't mind the wealthy at all either . In fact , they always give me a job. But the " Rich Boys " like Hedley with attitude , in whom probably didn't acquire it on their accord and obviously feel the need to "flaunt" .
I'm Glad some one like the Iceman takes such a stance.
Good on ya.

Thanks! It's an SP1 with full Akra exhaust (nice weight savings, andNice RC51
incredible sound), Power Commander, Scotts damper (love the dual
chamber) and 15-41/520 chain & sprockets from Dan Kyle. The usual
"free" mods: flapper, soft rev limiter. Unless you've ridden a modern
litre sportbike, it's pretty hard to describe the performance, but the
stock quarter mile time is under 10.5 seconds

P.S. I didn't inherit a penny. Internet cowards, hiding behind new
anonymous identities, are cordially invited to stop by CYSH and show
me how to fly a better line abreast surface outside loop

Re: Anybody do University + Flight Training at the same time?
To answer the original question, i did flight training during my last year and a half of a full-time Co-op Uni program... that's just when flying came into my life. Like a previous poster had noted, with good time-management skills, an acceptance that you're not going to get to go out as much as your friends and a small willingness to take a little hit on your grades becuase you're adding another academic course and a lot of time away from your school books, yes, it can be done and done well. I didn't get to go on (m)any long trips because I couldn't miss days of school being weathered in somewhere, but I made it work.
I'm still paying it off, but I don't regret a minute of it. Although I'm not flying professionally anymore, I'm still working in aviation and it's served me very well. In my final year and a half I did my PPL/CPL/IFR/Instructors along with 5 full time honours classes and a part-time job the terms I was in school... hell of a lot of hard work, but it built character.
Good luck.

Even though it seems to enrage some people here, it
was pointed out to me that high school costs less than
university, so wouldn't it make more sense to do your
pilot training in high school when you aren't paying
for university tuition and living expenses?
It's not like pilot training requires any post-secondary
academic knowledge! Most pilots I know don't have
a clue about mathematics, statistics, physics, biology,
chemistry etc.

Re: Anybody do University + Flight Training at the same time?
What you are saying does make sense. But not everyone wakes up in high school knowing that they want to do it. Or who knows, maybe the financial situation did not permit it at the time. As the other guy on the forum can't seem to grasp his name, but he said he soloed his kid at 14. Well that's one lucky kid! As for the rest of us, I guess part-time jobs and sleepless nights will do it until we reach our goal.Hedley wrote:Even though it seems to enrage some people here, it
