Type Rating
Hi,
I was wondering what the conditions are to obtain a type rating after having completed flight school. Are these usually given by airliners or do we have to purchase them ourselves?
Thanks,
RIMsky.

Yeah go for it, thats a pretty good deal. I know lots of people who have done that, they are all really happy, living the life and making the big bucks.

Thank you. I think I will wait a bit, obviously the prices will go up, but I am still a 19 year old student. I have yet to finish my University which I am starting next fall, and will be done by the summer of 2011, and then I plan on doing my training after that. I will try to set some money aside for my type flight classes and a type rating on a Boeing 747-400 (Boeing posted on it's site that the one for the 747-400 is good to go for the 747-300 and 200 as well.Hoov wrote:Yeah go for it, thats a pretty good deal. Do you need help with the finances? I have so much laying around here I don't know what to do with it. Wouldnt mind doing some spring cleaning and getting rid of some of this money.

I think you should refrain from saying yours. It's never too early to be informed, make a plan, and follow through with it. It's the people that lack to inform themselves that end up jeopardizing or missing their career train.!MC wrote:Hey RIMsky, I think you should post again in 2011 and we'll see what your thoughts are...

Rimsky have you considered just buying a type rating for something smaller to start with? 747 might be a little challenging at first, how about something easy like Dash 8 or something similar. Food for thought.

Well, I don't think it would. I wouldn't necessarily jump on a type rating ASAP. I am funding my whole training myself, thus I have to get the money somehow. The type rating, is good, but if I don't have the 1500 hours then my ATPL doesn't take effect. I'll instruct for a while, gain some hours, make some money, and use that money for the type rating.SinkRate wrote:250 hrs and a 737 type rating.......hmmmm
I wonder if that would work,
Let me know...

It's cool that your eager to get your career going. Your ambitious, dedicated and I am assuming that you have the flying bug in you.
But you really have to take it one step at a time. You have your PPl exam & flight test, night rating, Inrat exam / instrument flight test, CPL exam & flight test....to worry about. Oh ya...not to mention university & financing your training.....which btw is no joke!
Stop thinking about type ratings & focus on your training. Yes, you are allowed to think ahead...but don't go too far! Think ahead on how your gonna do your training.
I can guarantee you this. That once your gonna make your steps into aviation, your gonna realize soon that your a long way from your first job.
Your will start dreaming about having a shot flying king Airs rather then 737.
Your gonna see soon......your way of thinking is going to pull a 180!
BTW.....don't ever think about buying a type rating for a 737. A lot of people are gonna hate you for it!

Asking a pilot about what he thinks of Transport Canada, is like asking a fire hydrant what does he think about dogs.
I totally agree with you. The bug is here, and of course, we are all dreamers at some point. But why would someone hate me if I worked for my money and bought a type rating for a 737? lol..i don't get itTHEICEMAN wrote:Hey look...Rimsky

Yes that is the key. There is alot more to flying than just type ratings . Each company you work for will have their own Standard Operating Procedures synchronizing a two crew enviroment . Trust me this alone is a learning curve. But you really have to take it one step at a time.
Small steps . You need to learn to crawl before you start running.

You're right. But I still don't understand why I was told that if I buy me a type rating I'll be hated. LOl... maybe it's a joke, or I'm just not getting it lol...but still...give me feedback!Ice Man wrote:Yes that is the key. There is alot more to flying than just type ratings . The simple facts are that most pilots work many long years including some hardcore flying such as bush and arctic operations to earn their debut on a large jet . Although theorically your right , it is really no one elses business what you do with your money.....none the less resentments may still arise based on what I just said. You're right. But I still don't understand why I was told that if I buy me a type rating I'll be hated

Talk to me Goose !!!!
Ok I get your point. Well to those that feel that it's stingy that I plan on getting a type rating there, I might actually get 3 at the same time. Apparently if you train on the B747-400 you're eligible to pilot the 747-300/200 as well, according to Boeing itself that posted this a while ago. Wouldn't that be wonderful, THREE type ratings in ONE! FANTASTIC!Ice Man wrote:The simple facts are that most pilots work many long years including some hardcore flying such as bush and arctic operations to earn their debut on a large jet . Seriously, to be frank, I have no idea, but I know that they're an International Training Center, and when someone is looking to hire an F/O without experience, and no hours on type, and I already have a little type rating there, obviously my application will catch a lot more the eye than that of a pilot without a type rating. Here is the link with some feedback on from the people that trained at the center in BC.Ice Man wrote:Just curious . What are all these type ratings worth from Boeing if you don't mind me asking .

RIMsky I hope you plan on researching potential employers better than you have this site. If you don't know why "buying a type rating" is a sore subject with a lot of people, I suggest you use the search function. You have a lot of reading to do my friend.
(I'm not trying to be a dick here, I'm serious. You seem to miss a lot of sarcasm and get a bit upset with people giving you negative feedback. I honestly think you need to ask yourself why people are giving you negative responses. Critical thinking skills will come in handy in university. Don't take things personally, try to find out why people say what they do and react in a certain way. RESEARCH before posting! It's fine to ask a question if you can't find an answer, but many people have spent a lot of time answering a lot of questions already, give them the courtesy of reading their posts.)
Oh, and it's best to learn now that not everyone you work with will like your ideas. But you still may have to work with them. Being able to work with people you don't agree with (or even like) is a skill that may be more important than any rating. (and it's free!!!

Dyslexics of the world... UNTIE!
I'll do a search now. Still, people should write as clear as possible on a forum. I'm not here to identify "sarcasm". It's like beating around the bush. You told me right off the bat, and I will go and post a search now, see what the people have to say. No offense taken.mellow_pilot wrote:RIMsky I hope you plan on researching potential employers better than you have this site.
