Naturalized Canadian Citizens at Air Canada

Post by RIMsky »

I read somewhere, be it here or on Pprune, that somehow, the bigger companies tend to preffer people with Canadian names and ancestry. With the risk of getting bashed for asking this question, but at the same time feeling concerned because I am a Naturalized Canadian, actually grew up here as of 7 years old. So, is it true, that the big airliners or even the small ones have a tendency to preffer people with Canadian names?

Regards,

RIMsky

With the politically correct company like AC, being a minority might work in your favour.

I would not worry about it, but use it to your advantage.

The best candidate for an AC job would be an African-Canadian female, that is pregnant, and has a dissability.

Well, to reply correctly to this, I am a perfectly healthy young man, of caucasian Eastern European race, and Thank God, no disabilities. My name is slavic though, I wonder if that could influence the HR to disregard my application?

Gotta say, if the likelihood of getting a job depended on a name, there'd be a few more lawsuits for discrimination around...

if you're worried or concerned about the company you're applying to will judge contacting you based on your name/heritage...maybe you shouldn't be applying?

I think anyone with a different name would be worried with such things. If you are an immigrant to Canada, then I accept what you just wrote. If not, in this case you cannot understand the fear of being prejudiced based upon your name, especially if your name is Canadian and has an english resonance, or even french to it.

Well, anything that falls into the common ones, like the ones I would call: Tremblay, Filiatreault, Sommers, McCormick, it's pointless to give more examples, because looking for examples is a Goose chase here. But in my case, where my name rhymes with Dostoyevski Ghiorgy Ulovitovic (not my real name, but a similar example). It may sound premature to pronounce myself on this, but then again, the post here is not to judge which name is not Canadian, but to stipulate if HR for any Airliner, including AC,WJ,JAZZ, discriminate based upon this. At the same time, I do realize that it is a provocative issue here, and I hope that I am totally wrong, and that HR do not take the name and build prejudicial impressions based on that.

wouldn' worry about it much unless your name was Cap'n Crunch Burns or F/O Rusty Bouncer. And as long as most people can get there tounge around it and if they can't they usually give you an affectionate nick name.

Just had a look through my logbook, and I can honestly say whatever your last or first name is it won't hold you back. My own last name gets bastardsized all the time, and my family has been in North America for almost two hundred years. AC is not that type of company, if they were I wouldn't want to work here.

I am sure the only problem you would have with a name that sound's like Ulovitovic is having a chest big enough to hold your name tag.

Be proud!

The only problem in this whole thing is Rimsky. It sounds as if you are better suited to work for and recieve from some of our finer charter operators.

Paging Hedley to the thread.

Wait until he learns that he's being replaced by a black lesbian in a wheelchair who is "more qualified" than him. :smt044

"I would like to obtain that little paper that says: Degree. People might say it isn't important, but I really plan on going to Europe to pilot thereafter"

Remember that statement, so why even ask about Air Canada?

Hah. If it makes you feel any better Rimjob, AC wouldn't
hire me in a MEELLION years, even though I have a BSc,
thousands of hours, an ATPL, and the most whitebread name
you can imagine

I can just imagine the interview:

AC: "Mr Hedley. We have letters here from 37 captains here
at AC saying that we should not hire you. What is your response
to that?"

Hedley: "Gosh, I'm sure glad those guys are your problem
and not mine"

AC: "Have you ever been convicted of violating the Canadian
Aviation Regulations?"

Hedley: "um ... how much time do you have scheduled for this interview?".

No worries Rimsky... you should see the names at AC! ... a role call at the United Nations wouldn't sound much different.

Browse some Canadian companies on pilotcareercenter.com and check out some of the CP's names. There's a few I don't think I know how to pronounce correctly....
