Too Mnay Hours for the ramp?

Post by groundtoflightdeck »

Have many of you found companies that had max time for the ramp? I have found a couple, but it would make sense that certain places do (for retention).

Like how much time would be too much to work a ramp? Seems pretty silly to me.

Wait till you're told you have too much time for an airplane.

About 8 years ago I heard through the grapevine a company wanted ramp applicants to have comm and MIFR but no guarantees to even be considered for the aircraft. They wanted someone who could move up right away who would be "trained" (ie brainwashed) already if they needed it, but that person whould be happy working on the ramp otherwise. I balked at the opportunity, which in retrospect may have given me a boost when I badly needed it. That was before I got my crystal ball.

Sorry, but I think a company ought to hire pilots to fly airplanes. I know this is unusual, but I think ramp people ought to be ramp people, not pilots in bongage...dont agree with me? IDGARA!

One time in my job search about 8 1/2 years ago, I was looking to get out of my dead end flying job, and was ready to pull out all stops, I was ready to load large airplanes and see an improvement in wages for an eventual chance at flying. (This company no longer exists but there was a flow through to the aircraft from the ramp which was common knowledge and seemed more straight forward than the other company I talked about in the last post)

The end result: I didn't have enough time for the ramp. ( 1000 hrs )

I just couldn't win that year.

I'm right with you on that one Doc !

Pilots are pilots, rampies are rampies.

This thread makes me laugh because it illustrates how fickle some employers are. Not only do they require a PPC, but one thats valid so they don't even have to do recurrent training on an experienced pilot. Also, on the rare occasion where you're not lacking in "time" or experience, you have too much, and if you meet all those requirements, you may not have time in the right region.

When I started out, I had no marketable PPC's or time. Along the way I was able to learn the required skills when necessary, because some companies actually provided training for the right people, rather than hiring a PPC, thus proving that you don't already have to hold the job to be able to apply for it.

There are some good companies out there, they must be recognized for it.

I have to admit that in my job searching this spring, I ran into a company that was looking for some ramp workers, but told me that with my time (600hours then) that they would prefer less for the ramp, as I would be willing to work the ramp longer!
