wallypilot wrote:just so you know, most of the pilots that fly 1900's for that cargo operation out of DXB have refused to fly into Iraq after they were in Baghdad right before that 330 was hit in the wing with the SAM. From what I heard, the pilots basically refused, and the company threatened to send them all walking, but solidarity held out and those guys stopped flying to Iraq, but kept their jobs and just flew the remaining routes. Well, guess what.....they hired some new guys to fly to Iraq. then promoted some less senior co-pilots to captain becuase they were willing to fly into Iraq. Bastards. the pay isn't even stellar. not bad, but not awesome. not worth it if you ask me. stay out of Iraq. It is way worse there than most media or reports convey to us.

and, actually, Ivory coast is a way better option...(i know you were trying to be sarcastic cedarjet) but if you are careful, you can be quite safe in Abidjan or most other west african cities.

Actually, is was an Airbus A-300.

But I thought of that same incident when a few months ago when I woke up from a deep slumber in KLM Business Class, looked at the "Airshow" display, and saw that our track had taken us directly over northern Iraq, Bagdhad and were just north of Basra.

I find that is sometimes easy to overestimate the dangers of being in some places when you are not there. Nevertheless, I have no interest in going to Iraq. My impression is that pretty much everywhere the world is becoming less safe. The root of most of the world´s problems is overpopulation.

Are you looking to fly or fix?
I know of several jobs in "South West Asia" (new terminology for war zone) for mechanics mostly helicopter and electrical.
Entry level is 100k USD/yr thats at least 3 times the norm for an A+P I am not sure of the rotation. L3 is looking.

For pilots I think you are out of luck for direct entry, however try Kuwait and Saudi charter operators they are servicing Iraq big time. C130 and other freighters. I think this is a good long term prospect I know pilots who made a fortune on this sort of contracting after the last invasion. It tapers off for 18 months after the initial militery pullout as they arrange barges and other sorts of logistics.

Safty is not such an issue as others would lead you to believe. Stay in the compounds and make sure of the arrangements before you go.

The Aussie that was snatched recently was 10ft in front of the Aussie embassy.

"Make arrangements?" Ie: hire an escort? LoL, there goes your pay, which would defeat the purpose of going to Iraq to make a quick buck.

What I said was check arrangements.
Obviously you do not want to be in the suburbs as these guys were. Proximity to an embassy is meaningless unless you are inside, even then it is hazardous.
You also do not want to be selling military supplies etc out of your house or have an Israel stamp in your passport.

I think I used the work "compound that goes with the word "arrangements".
Important words.

Did you think work mans comp was going to cover this or maybe CUPE had an office in Bagdad?

Personally I would look for a compound that is not in Iraq.

KKboy :

Two questions.

How many compounds are at airports? Because if they are not at the airport you have to travel on roads to get to them.

How many Muslim countries have you worked in?

I have spent 8 of the last 10 years in Islamic countries.
I am presently in South Asia, in a spot where there are no liquer stores and lots of wailing towers..
I suspect I am several thousand miles closer to this issue than you and lots more comfortable with the culture, although I have never been in Iraq closest would be Israel which is a whole different story.

As for compounds the military have any in Iraq which would have flight operations therefore it's better for mechanics than pilots. No helicopter base has been successfully attacked.
The green zone seems less than safe although I suspect the Bagdad airport is secured. The road is not.

Like I said get based in Kuwait it's better.

I never said it was safe
But for 1000 a day I would seriously look at it.

I was just curious, so maybe you will get a kick out of this.

I picked up one of those alarm clocks in a souk in Jeddah so when I got back home I could wake up with the prayer wail.

The clock even has a little tower on it.

And I must admit I am not all that comfortable with some of their culture, especially their practice of beheading people, but then again that is just me and it comes from watching them doing it......Kind of stays with you in your subconscious.

Iraq stay out of. Saudi Arabia was generally good, but be very, very choosey nowadays and get details at great length. Qatar is ok, as is the United Arab Emirates. Give Yemen a very wide birth also.

Your Canadian, but walk, look, eat, talk, buy and live like an American.......so you're an American to someone who earns $700 CDN/yr, got the equivalent of a Canadian Grade II education, carries an SMG and would slit your throat for $20 US and a cheap TIMEX watch. If you do go and should ever get into any trouble, go DIRECTLY as fast as you can run or contact the nearest US Embassey.........they got some diplomatic power and will help Canadians........the Canadian Embassey?........you might as well call Charlie Farquarson for help.

Don't be impressed with your fancy Canadian Passport either. In Hong Kong, for $100 USD you can get one of those and a made-to-measure silk suit, if you don't mind waiting 2 hours total. Hell, I've met people in the Middle East and the Far East with Canadian Passports and they've never sat foot in Canada and have no intention of doing so either. Go if you wish, but do your "homework" on the prospective job real well first and make sure all the "I's" are dotted and the "T's" are crossed. Most of mine were 58 days on and 23-26 off, with paid transportation to anywhere in the world free of charge. There's all kinds of deals.......just watch yourself.

Do you set it 5 times a day Cat . . . or does your cel phone provide the other wails during waking hours.
