Changing flight schools, looking to train on floats HELP!!!

Post by PlanBravo »

Well I am changing flight schools (most likely), I am looking for any school / person that offers training from PPL to CPL on FLOATS (i.e. ALL ON FLOATS), I know this was mentioned before on this forum but I am looking for the most recent list of folks that offer training in this manner I would be interested in starting immediately (after X-mas to be exact).

Thanks,
-P

Give Sudbury Aviation a call. Though - you won't be on floats right after Christmas.

well, the west coast is a pretty good bet, even winter, if you have low ceilings you can still do touch and goes, navs, etc.... and also, you can't do all of yyour cpl on floats but a good majority yes.... I would recommend courtenay flight center, although don't know if their float program is still going or not...
You can always pm me for more info, I have grown somewhat familiar with different schools you could go to.

Really? I was always of the opinion that you could do your entire licence on floats if you could afford it...correct me if I'm wrong.. :?:

You can do everything on floats EXCEPT for spin training. You must be able to produce an aircraft that can spin for the flight test.

Other than that. You can do everything on floats up untill flight test time.

adam is right, you wouldn't be able to find a float plane which is approved for spins.. and I wouldn't suggest doing spiral dives in a floatplane either... floats are quite heavy and i don't see why you should risk the extra load factor...

Spirals are ok on floats.... as long as you don't let them develop. Sudbury aviation does Skiis all winter and floats when the water isn't solid.

I did my spin training in Vernon - great school and I did my cpl on floats at Airhart - they were great there too. Nice weather and more flying days compared to the coast. They are the cheapest for type - 172 XP when you consider that for 50 hour course - half are solo and half dual. Most don't allow solo hours. That was important for me as I want to be trained well enough that they trust me to go solo.

May want to check out AFC in North Bay. They do tail wheel and ski training as well as floats during the summer. Both of their tail wheel and ski instructors are first rate bush pilots and are both Class 1 instructors.

Sudbury Aviation Limited is likely one of the best schools around for that sort of training. However, this year they actually put their C172s on wheels and are operating out of the Greater Sudbury Airport. They are experimenting with it for this winter to see what happens. However, if you do decide to go there, just an hour and a half away in North Bay you can get your ski and tail plane training with Algonquin Flight Centre.

I work for AFC but would recommend Sudbury Aviation Limited any day. It's a damn fine school and like AFC, they let you rent the float planes solo. Although, I certainly can't disagree with G Whiz's comments. We just don't "exclusively" offer the PPL, CPL training on floats and skies. I'm sure we may be able to make arrangements though.
