gotta love saying "sorry Flight Level 190 unavailable due to low altimeters." Lowest I've seen was last fall in the Hearst / Kap area 2874 i say again 2874

Fairly regular occurrence on the East Coast. You get a low coming up the east coast, up through the Gulf of Maine, and another one approaches from over the Great Lakes. They join up over the Gulf of St. Lawrence into one big mother of a low. I've seen the altimeter in Wabush at 2798, about 20 years ago in January. The last big snowstorm we had here on December 14, the altimeter was 2853.

You may want to recheck your figures....

IF THE ALTIMETER SETTING IS: THEN THE LOWEST USABLE FLIGHT LEVEL IS

29.92 OR HIGHER you may use FL180
29.91 TO 28.92 you may use FL190
28.91 TO 27.92 you may use FL200
27.91 OR LOWER you may use FL210

Have seen pressure completely off the altimeter range top and bottom.
I guess if you are around long enough, it is bound to happen.
It is a little eerie, but if you are going somewhere where they don't report, then you just have to be a little more careful than usual anyway. Understand pressure gradients.
Once it is off the altimeter's range, it has become so radical that only a major meteorological event is going to drive it further from the normal. (almost like trying to achieve absolute zero Kelvin.)

Mark it in your personal log book. Show your granchildren. Boast at cocktail parties.
Stay away from people who may be affected by low pressure.
