Instructor Perks???

Post by Invertago »

Just curious what schools out there give their instructors perks, like discounted use of an airplane for personal use, or sim-time or just take you out to dinner to say thanks ever? I know pilots with airlines often get cheap travel, just curious if instructors get any perks aside from the wads of cash?

I know of one school that you got as much sim time as you wanted for free, if it was available.

Not sure if thats the norm, but figures id chime in.

We get a discount on the airplanes for personal use. I don't remember for sure, but I believe we can use the sim for free as well.

(My colleagues and I don't fly the airplanes on a personal basis very often though. I only have once so far.)

Goodbye,

Louis

Well, Guess I was "spoiled" then. When I instructed we got 10% Off Singles and 5% Off Multi for personal aircraft use; Free Sim (when avail); Uniforms (Fall/Spring Jacket, Polo Shirts, Dress Shirts with FTU Logo on) were provided; We were on occaison treated to supper at Kelsey's; on busier days for instructors (usually Sat & Sun) the owners would run out and get food for us (typically Subway, Wendy's, Harvey's, etc...). At Christmas, there was 100$ bonus which wasn't anticipated but appreciated.

Ha Ha!! - At my school we could breath as much air as we wanted, shovel snow at least equal to the amount that had fallen and "help" with some interesting weight & balance projects in the hanger - ALL FOR FREE!!

I didn't mention the "other duties as required" aspect ...

How about not only flight/ground instructing but also:

- Fuelling, moving, tying down, cleaning, and de-icing aircraft; ensuring fleet is ready for the next business day
- Occaisonaly running the tractor for lawn cutting (grass runway) and for snow removal
- Being dispatch/flight following on slow days
- Assisting the Municipality with Maintenance of the field, CRFI Reporting
- Helping the CFI/PRM with AD research and compliance; Updating Journey Logs
- Ferrying planes to an offsite maintenance base

I wore many "hats" while I instructed. Simply put, as part of a small school, every little bit of the "extra" work helped in keeping the business going. I definately wasn't the 9-5'er type of Instructor; 8 hour days were the exception, not the norm.

That's life in a small business. Not a bad lesson to
learn for the next job, which will also be a small
business.

The "prima donna" bit comes later, when you join
a union and start wearing polyester.
