online ground school
i searched this topic but i couldnt find a lot of information on pilottraining.ca; basically, i'm trying to save some time by studying alone.
i have a couple of questions regarding this site. one, if i do the "Private Pilot Licence & Recreational Ground School" will i be able to write the ground exam no matter what (if i get above 75% on the course)? two, what is a flight computer and will I need to buy that along with other ground school textbooks like From the Ground Up, Flight Training Manual and navigation plotter?
thanks

Re: online ground school
in order to write the exam (private licence), you must have 10 hours of flight time. You will also require a recommendation to write from an instructor.
a flight computer (whiz wheel) is a tool used for navigation (and other) calculations. You will definitely need one for flight training, and for the written exam.

Re: online ground school
thank you for the reply. one more question, can the instructor recommendation come from the online course?
Re: online ground school
you would have to talk to whoever runs the online ground school. I know most will give you the recommend, provided you meet a certain grade.
Re: online ground school
nemesest: Where is the school your taking the course with?
Re: online ground school
The online course is from Harv's air and hopefuly I'll do my flying at Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre.

Re: online ground school
I did the Harvs Air online groundschool as well. Your school can just recommend you from that. Your time on the site is recorded I found it helpful as I was working 40 hours a week... I also did some ground breifing sessions with an instructor at my main school.

Re: online ground school
Awesome, did you also use other stuff like From the Ground Up, Flight Training Manual, Navigation Plotter and Flight Computer? or was the course sufficient enough?

Re: online ground school
The course is very in-depth, but like all ground schools, it can't cover everything. I used the FTM mostly for the flight training part, and FGU as a back up. You will use the FGU anyway as it is required reading during your course. The tests are pretty good as well, but the PPL isn't simple when you are just starting. I also recommend the air command weather manual for Met, and the sharper edge practice exam. Let me know if you have any more questions...

Re: online ground school
I'd vouch for pilottraining.ca. Best $250.00 in aviation I spent yet. I'd almost suggest taking it in conjunction with your real ground school. One will reinforce the other.
I got a 75% on a sample PPL Exam using the pilottraining.ca course (although I blew a lot of the questions because I didn't have a Toronto VTA and thus missed most of the navigation questions)
The sample PPL Exam I'm talking about can be found at:

Re: online ground school
Take a look at this free online ground school!!!
http://www.faa-ground-school.com/privat ... ssons.aspx
But!! It is for a FAA licence. Airspace theory, VFR minima, Circuit procedures,..... are different in Canada!!!!

Re: online ground school
You can also check out http://www.canadianflightinstitute.ca It combines an offline component and a "live" video and audio lecture with a certified instructor. It might be a little more than the Harv Air Course.
Re: online ground school
I'd suggest taking ground school. If you're thinking of flying commercially, some basic things need to be taught. Missing out on those things means you're going to have to catch up. Online Ground School for a CPL candidate is not the best choice at all.
I'd suggest taking a regular ground school class, then for your written, write all the quizzes, take the final test, and then go and write the TC test. That'd be a good idea.
Good Luck
