Hedley, I have known Twotter for decades and the last place on earth he would fit in would be at Transport because he has scruples.Quote:

What a jackass! CID you are hillarious, you are the first person on this board to try and burn anyone who dissagrees with you. Is it really still a good time living in your mom's basement?CID wrote:Funny. When I suggest this twotter you just insult me. And might I suggest bronco78, watch what you send to twotter in a PM. He won't hesitate to make it public. I've been burned before. The guy has no scruples.Anyhow, please PM me and lets sort this out without everyone else seeing it..
Re: Worst engine in aviation
twotter,
Are you denying that you've criticized me for trying to move bickering to PMs? How about posting the contents of PMs?

Like I said. Be very wary of an offer from twotter to discuss things through PMs. He wouldn't hesitiate using it against you.

Nope, I'll admit i took your pm's and posted them. They had relevance to my arguement about you being a clown. I don't understand your link you posted because it is not relevant to this discussion. Again you use smoke and mirrors to confuse people rather than facts.
I have to admit though, you do keep me entertained.. Anytime I need a good laugh, I just look at what drivel you have posted recently. Thank you for that!!

So back to the original discusion. I would have to say I haven't had great success with the GTIO540 in the P- navajo. Definately one of my least favourite.
Re: Worst engine in aviation
1340, was great in 1940, even 1950 but just too old now. Like a hand gernade, pull the pin in the morning and hope she don't blow something....cyl, fuel pump, cyl, mag, cyl.

The GTISO 520 on the Cessna 421 is a junk engine if you have 3 pilots on the same plane. Shock cooling can be done easy and I've seen green pilots ball up the gearbox aswell.
The engine it self is only as good as the guy in the left seat.

Yes, but it's a fine engine with one good pilotThe GTISO 520 on the Cessna 421 is a junk engine if you have 3 pilots on the same plane

True, but I'm not sure that makes it a bad engine. All ofThe engine is only as good as the guy in the left seat
aviation is not always a fisher-price playpen. The 421 is
objectively a very capable airplane.

Re: Worst engine in aviation
It's tough to say since the worst of the worst are no longer flying. But here's my list in ascending order...
Any H series Lycoming. The IO-550. The GTSIO-520. The TIO-541. The TSIO-360. The GO-300. The R-4360. The R-3350 turbo compound, the IO-346, the Napier Sabre, the Rolls Royce Vulture.
This is based on general serviceability, reliability, and reputation. A ham-fisted pilot can wreck the best engine and there are always flowers in the junk yard for the engines I listed.
I'm an AME but not an engineer.

Hedley is right re the GTSIO 520. The C421 I flew was sold with 1460 hrs SMOH and still had all the original cylinders waste gate and Turbo. The only extra maintainance it got was carefull attention to the baffles and carefull rigging of the fuel sytem.

Re: Worst engine in aviation
The GTSIO 520 on the 421 isn't all that bad, since it 'only' has 375hp and has been redesigned to help with gearbox problems.Big Pistons Forever wrote:Hedley is right re the GTSIO 520. The real bad ones are the 435hp GTSIO 520 Ks on the Aero Commander 685s. Only one shop in the US will even touch them for an overhaul. Not too many of these ones left.

The 421 a good airplane.....GTISO 520 a good engine....OK have you ever worked on one? Not a great design...but I'm a PA-31/Lyc dude. All the clunanental stuff is junk to me.
Twin Cessnas make me laugh.....421B and its 9 tx pumps, great design...golden turkey!
Its quite an achivement to be the worst engine....

Take an engine that requires care when operating it....
....add a pilot to the equation......
......result....
AME's have lots of work to support their families.

Yeah it's tough to beat the ol' Navajoe. I heard Navair was running those engines on condition to like 3000 hrs or something ridiculous even though the pilots treated those planes like crap.Wrenchslut wrote:The 421 a good airplane.....GTISO 520 a good engine....OK have you ever worked on one? I'm stuck behind a 520 for the most part; we run over 2000hrs O/C but you can't ham fist it like a 540 and get away with it. An inch a minute, add lots of track miles for decent. And this is flying a 206!

Why in Gods name would any sane pilot ham fist any airplane engine??but you can't ham fist it like a 540 and get away with it.
Are some pilots so dense they can't figure out the engine is your life line?

You tell me, you've got more hours than me. Like you said, it provides plenty of employment for AMEs like myself. But some engines, like the 540, seem to be more tolerant of a pilot's density.Cat Driver wrote:Why in Gods name would any sane pilot ham fist any airplane engine??but you can't ham fist it like a 540 and get away with it.

Re: Worst engine in aviation
Somebody was dogging the Franklin a bit ago...I think they are amazing engines. Silky smooth with those six cylinders. The 150hp is a little easier to get a crank for. the heavy case 165hp is a tremendous engine and parts are easy to find, unless you need a crank. Then you probably are going to need to convert to a 360 Lyc or something. Boosted...you should look into a Stinson 108 series. i think I'm going to try a 108-1 or -2 next time, and see if that smaller tail makes a difference on the ground handling. Great airplanes and very reasonably priced. Might help if you mentioned your area of interest, ie 0-200 versus Lyc 235 etc. That way the Garrett comments wouldn't be of interest. Sort of narrow the scope.

Re: Worst engine in aviation
The last Franklin engine I saw was the 220 horse conversion in a C 172. It was really educational as you could see just about all of the inside of the engine from the outside
The pilot said the decision to look for a force landing site was really easy because the engine gave one massive bang, the prop instantly stopped dead and a whole bunch of oil sprayed onto the windshield.
The bottom line: Franklin engine 1 ..... Buddies blueberry patch 0

Re: Worst engine in aviation
There are many different engines in many different applications in my experience on what I have worked on as an AME
I would say the one engine that I have had the worst time with was the continental TSIO520. It's application would not matter a alot I don't think. Now if we are talkin engines in a specific application I would think that Cessna 337 or P version of same would take the cup.
P.S. I did work a tad on the Bristol Freighter and ya just had to pull the oil filter every trip to see how much metal was in it or if you could even get it out sooooooo maybe, but a very unique engine, I thought it was cool.

Re: Worst engine in aviation
I find the 360s on the 337 pretty easy to work on one you get use to the unusual install. Not my favorite engine overall but we run past TBO with maybe one or two jug changes. Ours isn't a P model though.
I've never seen a Stinson 108 with a Franklin in it so it goes to show they aren't that popular even though it was OEM. O-435 good. O-470 better.

Re: Worst engine in aviation
Garrett without a doubt, number of times I bled out doing fuel nozzle lockwire, ughhhh.
The AME debate, always entertaining. Sad part is, most pilots are more than happy cruising along, blissfully unaware of the work behind the scenes to make that possible. Over the years, I have put my job on the line to do the right thing, and dig my heels in when there was a safety concern that the supervisor brushed off because he wanted to play hero to make it fly. An AM "Engineer" is a professional who keeps them safe. A grease monkey is one who does what he is told. There would be smoking holes in the ground all over if we always did as we were told. Guess what those holes would be filled with? Yup, egos are funny things, glad some of you are gods gift to aviation, or so you think. I recall one guy, hated "grease monkeys", and was very lippy about it. He used to shut his engines down on the taxiway, and come rolling into the ramp "deadstick" in a J31, very cool indeed, professional beyond belief. Think I took his criticism seriously? Some of you should realize the value of good engineers and drop them a coffee from time to time.

Re: Worst engine in aviation
I started in the back of a hangar and haven't reached my 30th birthday yet

When I was at Flightcraft as an AME we were doing a power recovery on an Allison 501D13 on a Convair. We put the new turbine module in but still couldn't get the power. Turns out the compressor section had 20,000 hours on it and was finally wearing out! Not bad for an engine designed in the late 40s eh?clunckdriver wrote:I think some reputations have been damaged by poor operating and maint, just out of interest on my retirment flight on the B767/300/ER the engines had been on the wings for about 17,000 hrs, we sure have come a long way from the Goblin which lasted about 200hrs if you were lucky!
