question about the AIP...

Post by renfley »

got a question about the AIP...

I haven't flown in about 4 years now so I apologize if this sounds stupid...

do they still issue the AIP to pilots? I renewed my medical a couple months ago anticipating a return to flying and I still have not received it or the updates that I used to receive.

Have they stopped it completely?

Have they replaced it with the AIM?

a bit of clarification would be great!

Thanks

The AIP has been replaced by the AIM.

You may find an electronic version of the AIM here: http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/publi ... 1/menu.htm

I hope this helps.

This is not a dumb question.

You may recall that some years ago, Transport instituited
a $55 per medical "fee" (not a tax, a "fee", we were told)
to pay for the AIP subscription that every pilot received in
the mail.

Then, Transport cancelled the AIP, and replaced it with the
AIM. But if you want the AIM, you have to pay extra for
it - your $55 medical "fee", which was supposed to pay
for your AIP, is now kept by Transport.

Transport is however, hoping that pilots are dumb enough
that they don't remember or question this very questionable
double taxation.

Similarly, those of you around here who no longer require
the use of Clearasil may recall the fuel excise tax that was
added to avgas some years ago, to pay for ATC, nav aids,
etc.

Surprising no one, when Nav Can was formed, Transport
didn't give them the revenue from avgas that they were
supposed to get, to pay for services. Nope, the government
puts that right into general revenue, to pay for the CBC,
the gun registry and indian affairs, and NavCan now bills
pilots and operators AGAIN for the same services.

Again, the government is hoping you are too dumb or
too apathetic to object to this double taxation.

Looks like they're right.

We've covered this ground before. Here is that information again:
"These fees were intended to recover not only the costs of processing medical certificates but also the costs of other services provided to pilots without charge, such as safety publications.

Over the coming year, Transport Canada intends to make many of its publications available on the Internet free of charge. Included in this plan are many of the safety publications provided to pilots. The costs of producing and mailing safety publications to pilots will significantly diminish. Consequently, the justification for higher fees based on the length of the medical certificate validity period diminishes as well.

This amendment will replace the 14 separate combinations of pilot documents and validity periods and the 4 alternative fees with a single fee for the processing of pilot medical certificates, regardless of the type of licence or permit held or of the length of the validity period. The new fee will be the lowest of the current 4 alternative possibilities, i.e., $55 for the processing of a medical certificate. Those pilots currently paying $55 for the processing of their medical certificates will continue to pay $55. Those pilots who currently pay more than $55 will realize a reduction of between $15 and $130 in the fees they pay under this proposal."

History of "the fee"
