But, people still want to work there, go figure.

That may have been the case, then, I don't know....but wages are much higher than that now(i'll concede, though that they are still too low), accommodations are industry standard(hotel or company crew house), and the airplanes, while old(and remember some of these machines were in a very poor state when they showed up from navair), have finally been brought up to good working order. They are slowly being outfitted with modern GPS's, rather than the 20 yr-old clunkers that were in them before, and the sked is moving to a 4 on 3 off instead of 5 on 2 off. whether this has transpired yet, i don't know. But that is the intention.
I'll remind you that this job pays better than CMA for FO's and Captains, and your captain's upgrade will be a matter of 6-18 months, not 2-5 years.
The preceeding concerns the cargo operation.
The Medevac side is a much better story. Decent pay, and great schedule. Late model aircraft, with all the bells and whistles as is required by the BCAS contract. Why don't you all actually talk to someone who is currently working at Carson, so that you know what is going on now, rather than relying on ancient rumours that are extremely far from the current truth.
And then, if you think it is so crappy, don't apply. There are tonnes of other, way worse jobs that you can take.
