Starting out

Post by cdnry »

Hi

I've read a lot of the posts on here and on airlinepilotcentral.com and a lot of them seem to be very pessimistic about a career in aviation. I don't know if this is because the aviation industry is very hard or peoples expecatations about reaching Air Canada and Westjet are a bit too quick and unrealistic. I know a lot of people do instructing, then small planes, then regional and finally the major airlines. Are people saying it's a crappy industry because they want to skip all this and jump into the right hand seat fairly quickly, or is it a very risky career to pursue? Are there a lot of pilots who spend all the money to learn to fly and then never make it to the airlines by 40 years old or so?

You know cdnry,

The aviation industry isn't crappy - it has it's ups and downs like all other industries do.

The people who do nothing but complain on this forum are not the ones on their way up - those people are out flying airplanes, meeting real people, and doing real work.

If you put in the work, and always keep a positive attitude, you'll move up quickly in this game.

If you're thinking of a career in aviation, I'd highly recommend it - Don't take much from these forums, though.

some people want everything handed to em...

that being said, getting a start in aviation in canada is NOT easy..

Scuba_Steve doesn't know what he's talking about.

Just joking. I second his comments. Most of the guys who enjoy aviation are flying on their days on, doing something cool on the side (skiing, flying little airplanes, traveling, etc.). The losers spend their days off on AvCanada whining about how bad they have it. (For the record, I only go on AvCanada when I'm at work; I do cool stuff on my days off).

like combing that mustache of yours!? :p

Seriously, though, there's nothing easy about getting a foothold in this industry, so don't expect a quick, easy and straightforward climb up the aviation ladder. You need to be stubborn, and too dumb to know when to quit to get to where you want to go. Good luck.

Too dumb to know! I'll second that one!
