Airport Lighting
I once heard that there was a rule on the maximum number of inoperable lights in a row at an aerodrome. unfortunitely I can't seem to remember the number or seem to find any reference to burnt out lights.
I have found in the CARs 301.07 that it states that you require no less then eight lights and they can't be spaced more then 200'.
Now if you have three lights burned out in a row is it still legal to use this rwy?

Re: Airport Lighting
The max distance for lighting is 500' on the runway and 200' on the taxiway (according to NATOPS which falls under ICAO). Lighting is often placed at 200' so do the math for the runway. If the airport manager doesn't want to replace the lights on the left, look at the right side.
Does this runway have a presicion approach? Aren't there a few places tha only light the left side?
Clear as mud for you.

Re: Airport Lighting
This airport that has 3 lights out, wouldn't be a particular northern Manitoba runway would it?
Re: Airport Lighting
Nark 500' must be a US rule see (b)
(3) The lines of lights or retro-reflective markers required by subsection (1) or (2) shall be arranged so that
(a) the lines of lights or markers are parallel and of equal length and the transverse distance between the lines is equal to the runway width in use during the day;
(b) the distance between adjacent lights or markers in each line is the same and is not more than 60 m (200 feet);
(c) each line of lights or markers is not less than 420 m (1,377 feet) in length and contains no fewer than eight lights or markers; and
(d) each light or marker in a line of lights or markers is situated opposite to a light or marker in the line of lights or markers on the other side of the runway, so that a line connecting them forms a right angle to the centre line of the runway
No specific rwy airport in mind I've just seen a lot lately and it hass me wondering

Re: Airport Lighting
Sort of. It's a Naval Aviation rule, which is approved under agreement with ICAO. I suppose we're allowed to get away with more, given the places we fly. Perhaps I didn't look hard enough in the FARs but I didn't see anything.Nark 500' must be a US rule see (b)

There is some information and guidance here, although the disclaimer at the top of the page does indicate that the specifications are not intended to define the failure of a lighting system:
