Charles Adler: Canada is becoming a tyranny of politeness
Posted: February 03, 2008, 9:46 AM by John Turley-Ewart Charles Adler
It's a strange country we live in. For all the talk we hear about how brave men fought and died to keep Canada a free country, we sure don't act like a free people. In Toronto there is a problem with violence in schools - more in some than others, more in those with underprivileged than others, more in those with poor black kids than others... and a so called human rights lawyer is charged with doing a very thick report on what the problems are and what the solutions are and as it turns out the problem was Mike Harris, a premier who ran the government of Ontario for six years, and has been out of power for the last six years.
Does anybody really think that the issues Toronto is dealing with on the very important subject of young black boys and young black men doing poorly in school is about Mike Harris? Does anybody have the moral courage to talk back to this kind of larceny, this kind of deceipt, this kind of rhetorical manure? Are we really a free people?
Wouldn't a free people simply refuse to accept what they know in their hearts is nonsense, nonsense that is masking the real issues? I know we don't want to discuss problems in terms of colour, in terms of ethnicity, in terms of country of origin. We want to keep saying what the government and all agents of contemporary want us to say, that all people are the same, that all individuals are the same, that all groups are the same and when there is a problem, when that problem involves low outcomes in education, low outcomes in family unity and domestic harmony, higher rates of criminal behavior, drug addiction and violence.
When there is a problem, we must not point any fingers at the people who have the problem. If we are going to point, we must point at ourselves. We are the problem. We are the village raising the child...and if this country were a tyranny, run by a dictator, I could understand how we could just feel we have no choice but to keep sucking on this multicultural lollipop until we gag.
But I thought as a young child growing up in Canada that we a choice on speaking the truth or not speaking it. I thought that's what separated us from all those other countries where societies are under the thumb of
the evil man with his evil secret police force and corrupt judges and lying media lapdogs.
Now if I were still a child, I could still buy into the idea we are the country that I thought we were, and I guess I could go along with the idea that the troubles in certain cultural communities in this country are everybody's fault. I could swallow the idea that the family of the murder victim is as responsible for the murder as the murderer himself. If I were a child I guess I could swallow that. But as an adult I have had it up to here with the idea that I have to murder my own mind in order to fit in with a chattering class in this country that is betraying this country by chattering around issues, around problems and
participating in avoidance instead of confrontation.
Confronting people and their lies is impolite in a country that worships politeness. When did politeness conquer freedom. I don't know. There was no newspaper headline declaring this. No radio or TV bulletin. No big lunged broadcaster saying “Breaking News in Canada: Freedom of speech has been replaced by the Tyranny of politness.”
In a contest today between polite speech and freedom of speech, politeness won, freedom lost and we now return you to regular programming. Play nice my fellow Canadians especially with those who are never nice and never have to be. You made them that way. It's your fault.
Earlier this week a Toronto school board voted to have Toronto's first Afrocentric school. It's considered a solution. The premise is simple. Too many black kids have been forced into classrooms taught by white people in schools that have white principals. Sure the faces sometimes aren't white. They may be brown or yellow or black for that matter. But it's a white dominated system. White. White. Say it like you mean it.
Say it like it's a mean word a bad word.
On a native reserve in Saskatchewan, a young native father takes his two babies out doors. No coats no boots no chance of surviving minus 50C weather and they die. Within 24 hours we are told that the
white dominated society has not provided enough money for enough native reserves and so while we must deal with the actions of the young native father in this obscene story of child neglect, we are told that we must not be harsh or judgmental because after all, it's our fault that those children were frozen to death.
We stole their land, removed their opportunity, distilled the liquor, poured the liquor again and again and again until it resulted in death by exposure. If we weren't living in a free country, it would make sense for us to swallow that swill. It would make that sense that we could liquor up our minds and believe it and pass it on to our children. But in a free society why can't we talk back to the lie. Why do we continue to behave like some dictator has taken over the country? We know that in dictatorships there is only one emotion that needs to mastered in order turn the people into sheep. FEAR.
Fear of losing your personal freedom, your family, your life. Fear of losing everything because you said something. That's the emotion that becomes your personal tyrant.
It's the evil landlord who is demanding way too much rent. Maybe you haven't noticed? Or maybe you would rather not think about it. Not thinking is probably best way to avoid a problem. But there is only one problem with that theory. As long as your mind is functioning. Unless it has been damaged by the force of a lead pipe, the smoke from a crack pipe , or the ingestion of a vast and fascinating menu of things we use to avoid reality, unless you're out of it, your mind will continue to observe that many things that are said about the issues that matter most in this country are just bald faced lies that go unchallenged by people
who are supposed to be leading you. Where are they leading you to? Apparently into the desert of dictatorship.
You can salute now. It's the polite thing to do.

And as a comment to this thread...I'm sick and tired of our BS political correctness.
A couple of examples of things I would love to see changed…
If your Paul Bernardo (or any mass murderer), you’d be gassed.
If you kill someone drinking and driving your going to jail for no less then 20 years.
I like the “three strikes your out law” they have down south. We should adopt it.
If you immigrate over here and commit a serious crime. You’re going back. Now.
If you’re involved with gangs – read above.
If you caught carrying any dangerous weapon (knife, gun, ETC) again, read above.
If you burn the American flag and chanting death to the infidel during a terrorist attack - and live here in Canada doing such things, your going back to your native country of your fore fathers.
It is a Christmas tree, it is Merry Christmas. Ya don’t like it, don’t participate.
We need politicians with balls, and laws with teeth.
End of rant…

You guys are awesome! Although I truly think Charles Adler is a moron, I posted that statement sort of tongue in cheek. You know. Canada is becoming a tyranny of politeness and then I quite impolitely express my opinion.

When I hear this tool talk I can barely stomach it.
It's ironic really that all you sheep who apparently support Mr. Adler's message of over-politeness seem take offence at my lack of politeness.
Like I said before. Awesome example of the AvCanada's angry exteme right! (or this case "wrong")
Here's a clue. A guy who writes long articles using big words doesn’t necessarily know what’s he’s talking about.

But yeah I love how a kid gets gunned down....at his friends funeral...after being gunned down these days...and WE need to change this or its anyones fault BUT theirs. I had zero money as a kid...point...its how your raised and cared for/brought up....its the parents who needs to crack some heads and start giving a shit....not the communities around the problem areas. MY take anyways.

I disagree with this one. If you outlaw weapons, only outlaws will have them.KAG wrote:If you caught carrying any dangerous weapon (knife, gun, ETC) again, read above.

SYDNEY, Australia — Sexually transmitted diseases have spread so widely in some Aboriginal communities that mass treatment without individual testing, even for children as young as 10, is the only way to fight the problem, according to a medical paper published Monday.
The authors of the paper, Dr. Frank Bowden and Dr. Katherine Fethers, contend that the traditional method of screening and treating people individually is not working because patients often move on before their test results have been returned and because of a lack of resources.
Their paper, in The Medical Journal of Australia, recommends that when more than 10 percent of the population has sexually transmitted diseases, “all individuals within a particular age range would be offered antibiotic treatment without recourse to an individual risk assessment and without waiting for the results of diagnostic testing.”
Because there is widespread evidence of sexually transmitted diseases in children in these communities, Dr. Bowden suggested that everyone age 10 and older be offered the treatment, with adults giving informed consent.
A 2005 survey of indigenous communities in the Northern Territory showed that more than one in four residents had either chlamydia or gonorrhea.
Dr. Bowden noted that treatment of whole communities is common for other infectious diseases, like trachoma, which can cause blindness. Chlamydia, which can cause infertility and pelvic inflammation if untreated, is caused by the same bacterium as trachoma.
“The major difference is the way we frame the two conditions,” the paper said. “One is seen as a disease of poverty; the other is seen to be related to personal and deeply private behavior.”
Dr. Bowden has compared rates of infection in nonindigenous communities, where gonorrhea and chlamydia are relatively rare, with those in indigenous communities, where he describes the problem as hyperendemic.

I'm talking about carrying around knives and guns in public, not baning them all together. Do you carry a knife around when you go to the bar? I don't. Yes. I carry a knife everywhere I go, and I use it many times every day. It sits in a leather sheath in plain view on my belt, and I feel kind of naked without it. It's just a tool. I don't go to pat-down/metal detector nightclubs anymore, two of the times I was mugged was when I was leaving one of these and was an obvious easy target.Do you carry a knife around when you go to the bar? I don't. But break into my house and your in for a supprise...
I don't break into people's houses. If someone breaks into mine they will get a choice: surrender or run away, I'll let 'em do either. It would be unwise to choose otherwise, because after that I would mirror the same use of force as the police.... is there anything wrong or illegal with that? No.

Damn, you've had some bad luck if you've been mugged twice!!! I'd probibly be walking around with a taser.

Re: Charles Adler: Canada is becoming a tyranny of politeness
I recall a similar statement about Ralph Klein. I recall a statement along the lines of any moron could run Alberta successfully because of the oil there. Well old Eddy seems to have blown that argument out of the water however this seems to be the extent of your arguments when it comes from someone who is right of center.CID wrote:Charles Adler is a Moron.
What happened in Yellow Quill was awful. I just hope that good can come of it by keeping the spot light on this issue and hopefully someone has the balls to step up and take on the Native establishment to take on this problem. The chiefs and councils have failed and I believe children need to be removed immediately from these environments. White Red Black Yellow doesn't matter. If you can't look after your kids you shouldn't have them.

Re: Charles Adler: Canada is becoming a tyranny of politeness
Sorry. Ralph Klein is still a moron and so is Ed Stelmach. Both are incompetent, Ed in particular lacks vision and Alberta is still afloat in oil profits. So I don't exactly understand your point DD.I recall a similar statement about Ralph Klein. I recall a statement along the lines of any moron could run Alberta successfully because of the oil there. Well old Eddy seems to have blown that argument out of the water however this seems to be the extent of your arguments when it comes from someone who is right of center.
I predict continued prosperity no matter if Albertans elect Stelmach or Taft or an old corn broom. Not because they are competent leaders with good ideas. It’s because oil is heading for $200 a barrel.
Even Taft’s proposed “lefty” social safety net spending will barely put a dent in Alberta’s tax revenue.
The only thing that will affect Alberta’s profit potential is global acceptance of alternate energy sources that aren’t dependant on fossil fuels.
So I say vote “Corn Broom”. The slogan can be “I’m going to clean this place up”.
Yes, there is certainly work to be done but we can't ignore the fact that "native establishment" was developed under the watch of the Canadian government who acted on demands of the Canadian people. Natives (or first nations or indians/eskimos or whatever you wish to call them) have been swept to the fringe of society to the point where they are so marginalized that they are perceived as an anomaly or a nuisance that needs to be eradicated or controlled like poorly behaved children.
There needs to be accountability but there won't be until the department of Indian and Northern Affairs is dissolved and the funding for various "native" social programs fall under the same departments as programs for every other Canadian using the same level of accountability.
Right now, there is no accountability and a great deal of corruption. Federal money rarely makes it to where it's most needed. In my opinion, these young people in northern reserves don't have a chance. They are a lost generation and the cause isn't a simple personal failure. It's a societal failure.
If you grow up "poor" you have a chance. If you grow up poor in a small community in substandard housing where all of your relatives are constantly drunk , violent and uneducated, you don't have a chance.
Comments like the garbage that erupts from Charles Adler just make matters worse. He wants to erase history so we can eradicate these people without our conscience bothering us.
That's what I got out of his piece but I often have trouble figuring out exactly what the hell he's trying to say. Did this guy even receive formal training in journalism? I'd say he's Canada's Rush Limbaugh but Rush can string words together so that his statements are easily understood. I wonder what his credentials are?

Re: Charles Adler: Canada is becoming a tyranny of politeness
Three times actually. All drug addicts. The first got his ass kicked by yours truly, seriously. The second was really scary, two guys with masks and bats whom I outran. The third turned into a standoff with knives until he decided it wasn't worth it. Two of them were when I had just left a club, obviously unarmed. The third was kind of random, he followed me and then used a short cut to cut me off for an ambush. No one ever got anythign from me, nor hurt me physically. These were in several different areas of canada, areas which I was fairly unfamiliar with. I involved the police for the second two, and I can honestly say they were of absolutely no use at all. That's not my view of all police, I understand that you are dealing with a slice of society as in anywhere. I just happen to get the pompous pricks.KAG wrote:Damn, you've had some bad luck if you've been mugged twice!!!
