It's so common that an airport will be in area with nothing around it only to have a city grow around it. Then the residents bitch about noise.
Honestly as maintenance I too would not care about the time restrictions. If your trying to get a heavy or not serviceable for the morning the fine(if caught) are nothing compared to the lost revenue.

Re: Engine Run ups at 3:30 AM at YVR
You heard a turbo prop doing a run-up at YVR from W 41st ???!!??
Umm....not ot be rude but is it possible your hearing aid has gone wonky on you??
The late night heavies departing are the only ones that even twitch my ears at that time of night, and trust me, you cant get any closer than me.
MTU used to do engine runs at their place near the Canadi>n hangar, but I think they moved over to Russ baker way, haven't heard them cranking the throttles in a while... Used to hear it quite a bit, and THAT was loud. I think they had a little testing building and occasionally the earth would shake and smoke would come pouring out the roof of the place as some engine was put through its paces.... maybe theyre still doing it?

From reading his stuff he appears to be a flight instructor, so mommy and daddy may have money if he lives in a million dollar home...
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

I can remember being blasted for doing runs on a Navaho at 3 am in Moncton. However no one complained when the G1 used to taxi in and you would have to run for cover because it screamed so loud at idle.

It's turbo prop tip noise that travels the furthest. That narrows it down for ya.
Point the aircraft north or south and you will have less calls.
Maybe check your YVR directives on engine runs.

Are you FU$&ING serious!!?? I'll remember to tell you how to do your job the next time I jumpseat.Well I think you have to have permission to do a runup at YVR anytime. And it was a turbo prop. There are noise restrictions at night. I live several miles away as the crow flies. I realizethe industry is quite inexperienced right now. Some maintenance guy did not know any better.
Yesterday, I watched a King Air start and blow his blast into the hangar on start up. He then added more power to turn 90 degrees. Should have started the plane with the 90 degree angle in the first place. I remember when the blast blew the 206 away at Vancouver. Same thing, inexperience.
Really though. I start my shift at 8PM, the planes come home at 8:30, and they have to be out the door by 5AM. So with your brilliant plan for a 7am ban, we don't get the work done, the planes don't fly, the company loses they're contract, and we all loose our jobs. Yes, that sounds wonderful. Or you could just get up off your ass, buy a $.50 pair of earplugs and shut the Fu$k up.

Inexperience sounds about right.More and more companies have green youngsters. I had a jackass the other day run a turbo prop tail to the hangar at full blast doors open. I thought that was only flight school weekend warriors that did that. Get with the program and go to the designated run up areas. The company needs to give people the training and enough time to do their job. If this company can't follow that basic procedure what kinda aircraft procedures are they not following?

Re: Engine Run ups at 3:30 AM at YVR
This thread has struck a chord with me, much like businesses with double-entry doors that only unlock one and drivers that sit way back in the left-turn lane to trigger the advance, because their time is so much-more important than everyone else's.
Those who like airplane noise should always refer to it as "airplane sounds", and those who don't could continue to call it the noise they consider it to be. Bumper stickers proclaiming, "I Like Airplane Noise" seem self-defeating to me, in that they subliminally infer that airplanes make only noise.
Do a youtube search for the sounds of airplane engines starting if you enjoy those, especially like the sound of the big, GM 675's starting up, although those are locomotive engines.
I personally get a thrill anytime an engine is started ,anywhere. Bringing mankind's greatest creation to life can't help but stir the soul of anyone who hasn't had their's sucked out by the path their lives have taken.
I vividly remember my first ground-run experience with the big, Pratt and Whitney JT9D at Gate Ten in VAncouver when the night shift was working on the first 747 Classic we had received. Standing to one side-hiding behind the Divco, actually-I simply could not believe that huge fan could possibly spin any faster, but it just kept on accelerating until it must surely be going to let go. And it was only accelerating up to idle speed....
When I started out at Big Red in 1970 as a midnight-shift mechanic, I used to try to get outside in the dark to listen to the few engine runs that were deemed necessary, as the Company always strived to maintain a good neighbour policy way back then even before any regulations were introduced.
In fact, I- just now-remember standing in pitch darkness,in the bed of the pickup truck, peering over the top of the blast fence, looking up the tailpipes of four Rolls-Royce Conways, watching mesmerized as long, blue fingers of flame found their way through the strobing turbine discs, beginning at one spot and slowly spreading around in a circle as more and more burners took light.
I would wait 'til the last second, judging the wave of heat slowly approaching me, then duck down at the last possible moment, savouring the enveloping warmth and intoxicating aroma of Chanel JP4.
Sigh.
Is this a great business or what?

Re: Engine Run ups at 3:30 AM at YVR
To the people criticizing him for living close to an airport. 41st ave is not close to the airport, being 30 city blocks north (except at the furthest west end at Marine Drive but no pilot could afford to live there), nor is it aligned with any of the arrival/departure paths. I'm also doubtful of being able to hear a turboprop run-up from that location. Perhaps the 3am Cathay flight was on its way out??? I used to hear that flight head out when I lived out at UBC.
Re: Engine Run ups at 3:30 AM at YVR
It really depends on which way the wind is blowing at YVR. When you get the rare southerly wind you can hear airport operations clear as day up into vancouver. So my proposed solution is that people who don't like the airport noise find a way to make the wind blow straight down the 26's every day - that's a solution i'm sure everyone would like!

Re: Engine Run ups at 3:30 AM at YVR
The tip growl from a -8 is a sound thet carries for some reason, Although Air North still has some 748's that pass thru YVR (orange tails) which could also be the culprit, if they were undergoing maintenance in YVR to make an am dep. (do they overnight?)
The runup area at the end of Lima or H2 wide area is as good as it gets for isolating sound at YVR from the fair people of the city.
It used to be just the folks in Burkeville who had issues (except for the security dude, what a beyatch... I used to wake him up at the south terminal at 4.00am he complained his beauty sleep was disturbed by several thousand prop horsepower crushing air molecules 30 yards away).
Could the "atmospheric conditions" be a factor??
Still air ... coldish... inversion ...westerly wind??? to reach all the way over to 41st???

Yes, you do have to have permission, so chances are the maintenance guys had permission. I don't think this is a question of inexperience. Many operators aircraft are out flying all day and maintenance can only be done at night. If it was a turboprop that you could hear from west 41st, I'm guessing it was a metro. In the middle of the night, tower requires runups to be done at the end of 26L, it's the farthest from any residential areas. however, if you live on west 41st, near say Dunbar, or SW Marine, there is definitely a chance you are going to hear it.patter wrote:Well I think you have to have permission to do a runup at YVR anytime. who cares.
same as people living near a rail road track, you know there's going to be noise.

Run ups? I think not. It's just the CNK and CA Metros at ground idle.
