Will there be video???
Somehow my daughter and I have decided we are fascinated with this upcoming satellite shootdown. In fact I wish it were burning up naturally over Kansas, but alas it's not. So if anyone hears about a good video link of the whole thing, could you post it here?? Thanks...Stinson

Re: Will there be video???
anybody else scared that they have this ability?
Re: Will there be video???
pretty stupid of the americans to shoot it down. imagine the amount of shrapnel they just created in orbit because they blew up this satellite. Can anyone calculate the force exerted on a 5 gram washer impacting on a target at around 15000 km/hr?

Honestly since I heard about this I thought why so public? they could shoot that thing down and no one would know. I think this is just to show a few nations that they have this ability, further to that this was to show the public that the money they have been spending on missle defence is working and there getting something for the price.
And didn't this satalite mysteriously fail imediatly upon being deployed, I bet ya a case of lucky lager it was a shell satalite sent up for this sole purpose. Remember the normally schedualed testing of a bomb in flordia just before Iraq was invaded how come there isnt any other regualar bomb testing covered live on CNN?

I thought the idea was, break it up into small pieces that will burn up in the atmosphere on re-entry. Whereas the entire thing would have been a hurtling large object.Four1oh wrote:pretty stupid of the americans to shoot it down. imagine the amount of shrapnel they just created in orbit because they blew up this satellite. Well the idea was to hit the fuel tank which was full of a toxic fuel. If the fuel tank survived reentry, the vapours dispersed when it hit the ground could have killed hundreds of people. There was a memo sent out to HAZMAT teams across the country about the isolation distances if it came down intact in a populated area. If they did hit the fuel tank, the only hazard now would be associated with falling debris.
P.S. 130 miles is a very low orbit. Any debris caused by the explosion won't stay up long with a perigee of only 130 miles. The ISS orbits at 200 miles and even at that altitude it needs help to stay up.
