You know you fly too much when....

Post by Bronco Billy »

Hello fellas!

Sorry if there are some things you can't understand as my first language is french. You might catch the idea but forgive me for my spelling mistakes.

I'm recently flying alot and i have a tendency to associate every thing with my flying. I thought it would be funny to post here what are you'r ''professional deformation''.

Let me give some few examples:
I'm driving my car and everytime i pass on some old bumpy road i just think to my self that i'll soon get out of those turbulences or that i should have check the GFA...
Another driving one:
Everytime i exit the highway i'm checking if i'm drifting or sliding...
The last one:
When i wake up in the morning the first thing i do even before saying hello to my girlfriend is to check the weather to see if i can fly or not...

Anyway there's lots more of them just post it to let us know :smt040

When accelerating on the on-ramp, sometimes the steering wheel inadvertently gets some back pressure. Habits!

I find it's the phraseology that creeps across from my little ATC life into my real life.

After working a long day I was driving home one night and caught myself actually straddling the yellow line on the road

This happened just last week:

After 2 long days flying 15+ legs with the same captain we land at our home base and taxi to the hanger. My car is parked at the terminal so he is kind enough to give me a ride in his car. Pulling out of the hanger parking lot I jokingly give the old "clear right". But without a seconds hesitation he automatically replies "clear left".

Back from the flight training days...

I'd be driving home on cruise control and decide to slow down, reach for the gear shifter, and realize that it didn't feel as round as I remembered. Funny thing is that it happened more than once.

You know you fly too much when your own wife now says "Say again" back to you.

While I was doing my initial private license training (way back when  ) I didn't drive a car for about six months. Near the completion of my training I finally got back into a car again and the first time I went to start it I instinctively went through the C152 start checklist.

It felt all wrong when I couldn't find the mixture lever.

Good thread...

My Wife was driving the other day, we approached a crowded intersection a bit too fast and I pulled up on the E-brake, trying to gain some altitude thinking it was the Collective..... We got a good laugh out of it.

More times than I care to admit, i have started doing a GUMPS check when i get in my car after flying. I also find my self disappointed that my car has so few switches, instruments and knobs to turn. One day I want to buy a classic car and outfit it with the 6-pack (OF INSTRUMENTS!) and lots of nice switches with red covers.

Back when I was instructing, I was driving on the highway with a pilot friend from the airport.
I was drifting to the right out of my lane.
I pushed in the "left rudder pedal", which was the brake pedal of the car, and almost launched both of us through the windshield.

First when I was instructing I used to plow snow in the winter to help pay the bills, occasionally if I pushed the snow a certain way it would cover the windshield of the pick-up, I caught myself many times at 4 AM looking down for the DG and staying on the gas...instead of slowing down. :?

On a number of occasions (way before it was somewhat normal to have a GPS in a car) I would find myself looking for the GPS to get my ground speed and distance. 8)

Slight thread-jack ... I sometimes dream that I'm
flying in the Pitts just above a country 2 lane road
and I've got good speed up, but there are a steady
stream of power wires crossing the road, and I'm
trying to find an opening in them so I can pull up -
they're kinda hard to spot at 180 mph.

Anyone else have flying dreams, esp about flying
underneath wires?

I have had a few flying dreams, none about flying under wires though. I have once woke my wife up to go do some flying, oddly enough, she had nothing do with the flight....and neither did I. I have a few times wondered what speed my grand caravan should rotate at. Other flying things have happened, my car is an airplane,

I fell asleep on a westjet flight. We hit some pretty bad turbulence, I woke up with my left hand grabbing for the control column and my right hand trying to find the power levers. The kicker ...I was in the back with all rest of the passengers.

...prior to engine start of your car you call "clear".

Yes Hedley, I've had dreams about flying underneath power/telephone wires. Kind of a nightmare when you can't find a gap!

When you get into fog, you pull over, yank the door off, and proceed with your head out the door...... ;-)
