airport code

Why do airport codes have "Y" in them? Example cYvr or cYYc?

When I first started flying, (1959) all airports in Canada were identified with 2 letters. eg: QR for Regina, QV for Yorkton etc. etc. I think it was the ICAO that gave everyone a 3 letter identifier so Canada received all the "Y" s. Now Regina became YQR, Yorkton became YQV, etc. With the introduction of GPS and other area nav systems, a fourth letter was required to separate the airport identifier from the associated VOR so Regina became CYQR etc etc.
What has always been curious to me is the significance of the Q part of the identifier. There are so many of them. Must be something either historic RCAF or telegraph communications or something along that line.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Above to read: Airport of the Queen, Yorkton.

As far as I know there is no Queen Yorkton or queen in Yorkton for that matter.
