Help choosing a Prop and engine
I have an early model c-182
Its time to overhaul the engine and I am thinking on the Texas Skyways 520 u/ts. It’s a 280hp Carbureted 520.
Does anyone have any experience with this engine?
I can’t use the P.ponk because they have not stc’d it for the early 182’s
Also I can’t decide between the Hartzell Buccaneer and the Mccauley black Mack. Any experience with these would be appreciated.
Thanks

How early is your 182? Ours is a '65, and we'e going with the p-ponk to match up with the 3 bladed Hartzell blended prop, which I highly recommend. I don't klnow if it will match with the 520, but it's sooooooooooo smoooooooth it was one of those few pleasant surprises aircraft ownership throws you.

If money is no object ... go for the Texas Skyways.
I toured their facility a few years ago and got a test flight in the modified C-182
Very impressive.
I ended up going for the Norland STC in my C180 with the 260 hp conversion and the McCauley Black Max prop. I performes well and would recommend this route to anyone looking to overhaul the C-180 or C182 engine.

Yeah dude, go with the Skyways!!! We had a 1960 C182 with the Texas Skyways conversion swinging a Hartzel Scimitar propeller... unbelievable performance! Climbed like a bat out of hell and 142kt cruise.

Thanks for the comments.
Has any one used one in an early model 180 on floats? What kind of cruise speeds did it get?

Not sure if the Bonaire conversion is STC'd for the C182 but I thought I had seen one advertised on a C180. I had one in a C185 and it worked real well with I think a 3 blade black max. It is always nice to stay with the carb. though to have a Mogas STC or at least that option. Sometimes 100LL is hard to come by. Just something else to consider if it is even an option?? My buddy has the 520 / carbed on his 180 and it works real good.
