How many is too many position reports?

Post by osprey »

Flying around Northern Alberta lately and I couldn't help but notice there are alot of aircraft with an "AF" in there reg that give a position report every 5 to 10 minutes. Is that a company thing? Seems excessive to me.

Yeah, we have the same problem during the summer here in Quebec. The enroute frequency gets clogged by pilot doing position reports every 3-4 mins. I think one position report every 15 mins is fine, unless you're in a very heavy traffic area or you see/hear another plane near your area.

Position reports, while surely a good thing are generally WAY too long winded.
The proper report should begin with the airport in question. eg. "Armpit Lake traffic, this is ABC, inbound from the south, landing Armpit in Five." That's it. No need for a long drawn out advisory. Short, sweet, to the point. Aimed AT Armpit Lake traffic. When and where. Nothing more is needed. WHY do we hear everybody's life history on most advisories?

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

My least favorite radio call ever "Conflicting traffic please advise"

I conflicting to the traffic but I'm not going to say anything because they didn't ask me to advise

*shudders* I have to agree with you. I think in any given daylight hour during the summer in southern Alberta, at least 90% of the radio calls end with that. I'm still trying to find where in the CARs, FTM, radio ops manual or AIM there is a guideline saying you need to add the redundancy...

Any position report where you lull me into not listening to the next 5 reports is excessive. I like Doc's report just fine, maybe throw an altitude in there so I can run and hide from you.
