General Aviation Knowledge

Post by RIMsky »

Well well, the time has come for the CQFA admission tests. I recently spoke to the admissions commitee, and of course, these are going to be held in the three following cities on the 29th of March, 2008; Montreal, Quebec and Chicoutimi. All in all, 330 subscriptions up to now, with 40 places to go. Now, for all I know, on the admission exams, there is a general aviation test. I know that avcanada, for the past more or less 4 months and so that I've been navigating the numerous posts here, I've gathered quite a bit of information, yet, like we all know, all that is here, at times, is to be taken seriously, as it can be taken with a grain of salt.

Now, on the exam that I have to take, I need to know the fundamentals to general aviation in Canada. I was curious, if any of you are willing to share any facts that you think are pertinent. This test is very important to me, as it will, if all goes my way, in the best case scenario, save me 50 000$ more or less. I know the question might seem silly, yet please, if you have anything that you think is important, please post it. If you're going to take this post and make it look like a joke, then please abstain yourselves.

My anticipated thanks to everyone that contributes generously so that I can enrich my knowledge towards my application!

Thank you all :)

Well man.....what exactly do you want to know? It's impossible to convert 60 hours of private groundschool into several tips. Do you have a list of topics that will be on the exam?

For general aviation knowledge, I highly suggest you use, "From the Ground up. Millennium addition"
It's the standard book used for intial flight training & it covers everything! They will ask you to buy in Chicoutimi..

I have a second hand one in good condition, with the workbook for sale. Original price for text book & workbook is about 50$. http://www.canada-shops.com/Magasin/vip ... 475.2.html

Willing to sell for 25$ all in & I live close to dowtown Montreal.

Let me know if your interested.

Asking a pilot about what he thinks of Transport Canada, is like asking a fire hydrant what does he think about dogs.

I did it last year and I already had my PPL. None of the questions were seriously connected to GA. Stupid things like "name 4 aviation magazines" and "which is bigger, a 747 or a C-150". There is also a page long text about what you plan to do when you're finished that you have to write. This part is easy anyway. The real thing is the interview etc. Be prepared to be PFO'd. Lots of people don't get in the first time. I made it to the "stand-by list" last year and I had a PPL and very good knowledge of commercial aviation. They never called back, I'm glad it turned out that way as I'm finishing my twin-IFR by the end of this month anyway. My friend who was accepted last year (it was his 2nd try) and started last September hasn't even touched an airplane yet.

Good Luck !

And he won't be for another 6 months. If I remember correctly, they start their PPL on the second year and do the CPL-MIFR on the third one.

The only advantage here with Chicoutimi, is that you don't have to pay anything except for the living expenses. On the other hand, if you do end up doing it in a private FTU, of course you finish faster, yet in debt, unless you have a source of money. What's certain here is that you either give up 2 years or so putting aside the money, paying for your debt, or going to school. It all sums up in the end, according to me of course.

A CEGEP (pronounced /ˈseɪʒɛp/ or /ˈsiːʤɛp/; French: Cégep) is a post-secondary education institution exclusive to the province of Quebec in Canada. CEGEP is a French acronym for Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel, meaning "College of General and Vocational Education".

The purpose of CEGEPs is to make post-secondary education more accessible in Quebec, as well as to provide proper academic preparation for university.[1] There are both public and private subsidized CEGEPs with the public CEGEPs having little or no tuition fee. The CEGEP system was started in 1967 by the Quebec provincial government and originally had 12 CEGEPs. Today there are 48 CEGEPs in Quebec, of which 5 are English language CEGEPs.[2][3] There are also 50 private colleges, including 6 English language colleges.[4][5] While CEGEP refers technically to only public colleges, in common usage the term is sometimes applied also to private colleges offering some of the same programs.

It's an avcollege in Chicoutimi, with the operating base at St Honore. Nice airport, nearby approaches at Bagotville, and Alma.

Chicoutimi has it all over YYZ, YAM, YQT, and YYC for housing restaurants, bars, scenery, outdorrs, and women. Sadly, it is one of the pay for play avcolleges.

Mind you, to live comfortably in the area, and to get out and enjoy life, Alberta grade 11 French will not give you much to communicate with. It might have some entertainment value for your collegues on an evening out.

Oh yeah, for genav knowledge:
For both Quebec (way smaller circle) and for Canada, figure out who in the 703 and 704 world is hiring and what they would hire you for.
Know that there is a 703 & 704
Don't for God's sake tell them that your Dad, Uncle, Mom, or Big Brother is with Air Canada and that all you have to do is get an IFR and you're "in there."
Flying magazines, try and pick CDN ones.

Ha!

Rimsky....John Abbott College in th West Island, also has a Cegep program for pilots. I saw one of their apaches @ YUL. I think?

To each their own......I spent 38K to get to my CPL. I don't regret it one bit!
If you don't get in to the CQFA...it might be your only option, unless you desire to go to the military.

The financial struggle can be a very good learning experience! It teaches you the real value of a the $
