If any part of the country is more jaded towards the federal government, it's gotta be Atlantic Canada.... not enough welfare cheques to go around, I think with the amount of taxes I paid last year I should get a card with the picture of the welfare family I supported last year...

I don't consider myself rich and I still don't see why I should give $50 (or feel any pressure to) for memebers are staff that are retiring. If there's a collection and I like/respect them, then I'll consider a contribution. Many of the people I work with are miserable, ignorant and lack basic social graces - why should I give them $50.

Then again, I'd give more if some others would leave now!!!!

I tell you...its all about money. Really. People in the workplace have gradually become so complacent about their relationships with one another, that they think its made up for by pitching in a few bucks for a lame party, that no one really cares about anyway. How about this...that same employee over the last 35 years probably got married, had a kid or two, probably achieved some major milestones personally, perhaps got admitted to the hospital once or twice...maybe lost a loved one, etc. Wheres the compassion for these situations? Where were the collections for some flowers, or a card that was signed by everyone showing some compassion....Where is the show of support for these experiences...where? They dont exist for the most part because we are slowly becoming the most selfish, self centred culture in the history of civilization. You honestly think that someone who has worked in a culture like we do will give a shit about his $500 dollar NavCanada jacket? Nope. Hes going to ebay it for a few less dollars and say good riddance to the career he left behind, the jack asses that didnt really care.

Now if we worked in a culture of support, on a sincere, continuous basis...I would pitch $50 no problem...

I fully support my taxes going to Welfare families in need.

However I personally have met my fair share of people on welfare who personally acknowledge their own abuse of the system... "Why should I get a job when I don't have to?"

And no I don't mind pitching in $50, I make $50 in 30 minutes on an overtime... why is this even a conversation. Give buddy the $50 and tell him to go f#@$ himself if you like, why don't you as you say, say it how it is if you've got the guts, sorry "nutz" to? Give your $50 then tell buddy how you really feel.

My whole point is you spend a lot more money on a helluva lot more useless things than $50 for a retirement gift.

I guess you work with an entire lot of crabby a$$holes. Personally at my centre I respect and really get along with at least 90% of the guys with 30 years or over.

No one says its not a good spot to work...geez guys dont blow this whole thing out of proportion here. There are a few asses around for sure...but there are more good people. I stated from the start that I didnt agree with the standard for all retirees. If I respect that controller, I feel like contributing to that controllers retirement gift. Thats it, thats all.

Just wondering what other centres take is on collecting $50 from each union member for retirees. Is it a common practice across the country or is this something elective at our centre?

People are retiring from NC with this extra something from the union....?????? Like everything else they get isnt enough....

I personally have an issue with it....

Why don't you explain to them that the $50 goes not only towards a party for retirees, but also goes to a collection for the cleaning staff that is given to them before Christmas?
This is because it was felt that having donation envelopes in plain sight of Cleaners and other staff was not the correct thing to do.

Yes BC you are correct. The $50 is for retirees and cleaning staff, and the man in charge of it is a great person for doing it...there is someone I have utmost respect for!

Listening to the Prima Donnas that are IFR controllers all around them, and making the money they make doing cleaning chores, must be rather irritating.
