My frozen Car
Well I guess this is how much of a backwards city girl I am!
Up here in YZF... brought my Jeep along (traded the 'Stang a while back haha)
This morning...
Tried to wash the window... some fluid came out and froze to my window... Then apparently all the fluid froze in the car... The coke I accidentally left in there was one solid... chunk...
I put on the heater and blasted air into the car... in came the snow... man oh man...
Not to mention the car isn't a fan of starting in the morning...

Re: My frozen Car
Summer is a while away. Add rad coolant, dump in synthetic oil, and be best to either, pull the batttery at night, or break down and pay for a plug-in battery blanket.
You'll wait a long time for the streetcar in YZF.

Re: My frozen Car
If you're low on bucks, just put a bare light
bulb under the hood at night, so that it
doesn't touch anything and start a fire. Do
that right after you shut it off.
As JC says, a 0W30 synthetic oil will
help starting, too. If you're down on
bucks, don't change the filter, just pull
the drain plug and refill with the new oil.
When you start the car, select re-circ
and max heat defrost blower and carefully
scrub out the air inlet with a brush. After
you start the car, go back inside for a few
minutes to let it warm up (and let you
warm up) and hope no one steals it

Re: My frozen Car
90% of jeeps sold in Canada (I had a 99 cherokee and a TJ prior to that) will have block heaters!! Find the little electric plug and cable hiding under your hood and plug that beast in every night! It'll save you a ton of headache.
Synthetic oils will help for the starts. Depending on how cold it gets you may want to bring the battery in with ya. at temps lower than -15 it'll lose upto 50% of its cranking power... Or if you don't want to do that all the time, buy aforementioned battery blanket or perhaps one of those little trickle chargers and leave it plugged in (thats what I do) I also have a small ceramic buddy heater that I use to keep the inside of the car at more desireable temps when the mercury drops low..
Oh the joys of living anywhere in canada other than vancouver
Keep up the good work lil buddy

Victoria is warmer than Vancouver. Less snow, alot less rain, aaahhhhh.
Re: My frozen Car
Install an Auto starter (ProStart) from CanTire. Set the defrost the night before like Hedley suggested and in the morning start your car 30 minutes before you go outside and you have a warm car to get into and any remaining ice or snow is a breeze to take off. CT has them on sale all the time sometimes as low as 30 bucks. Leisure rules!!!
Re: My frozen Car
Those are all good suggestions, but... let's focus on the root of the problem, THE JEEP!!!
I know some of you will bash me... please proceed.

Hey, it got her to the big smoke. It's a ride (ignition pending) to work. At the end of the winter, if she hasn't shot it for not starting, she'll ba able to sell it for more than it'll fetch anywhere else, 'cause it's the north.
It's better than a '74 Gran Torino, or whatever rampies are struggling out to the airport with these days. Except, of course it won't start.

no sig because apparently quoting people in context is offensive to them.
Re: My frozen Car
The Jeep is an excellent car as long as it works. My main concern is its reliability or lack of it. It's unlike any other suv, but it's also overrated and overpriced. But hey, I'm biased towards Japanese cars; So take it for what it's worth.

Re: My frozen Car
Well... All kinds of crap was apparently "wrong" with it... oh well :/
On the bright side... I have now some synthetic oil... they found my block heater and now I can join everyone else with the a blue wire sticking out the front... and also... I have a new filter... apparently mine was deformed :/
Oh, and new washer fluid and a battery blanket!!
Now apparently I need new power steering crap because its leaking and damaged... and transmission fluid 'cause mines apparently full of crap.
Annoyed Wolfie....
PS... I got a play station 3 if anyone wants to hang out... :/

I think we know who is really responsible for her truck not starting...... Al Queda.
She’s built like a Steakhouse, but she handles like a Bistro.

Re: My frozen Car
My bro had a 1992 Jeep with the 4.2l and put over 400,000 km on it. All orig. the only problem near the end was rear main seals leaking oil on engine.
Standard trans.
Block heaters draw 300-400 watts I hear. If you pay utilities look out for it. Maybe use a timer.
I swear by synthetic oil - 5w50 castol.

Re: My frozen Car
I've been driving a jeep cherokee for 13 years. The thing is still good and starts just fine with the block heater on at anything below -15. I just have a wierd problem of the inside of my window frosting up. Scraping leaves a shower of snow on my dash. Plus there's an interesting effect of snow drifts forming on the door window ledges that builds up if it's snowing and the jeep is parked so the wind comes from behind. Somehow the snow gets in a crack somewhere and blows right inside and forms the drifts. Really funny to look at.
Having a standard that pilots lose their licence after making a mistake despite doing no harm to aircraft or passengers means soon you needn't worry about a pilot surplus or pilots offering to fly for free. Where do you get your experience from?
Re: My frozen Car
Your window fogging up with the heater on might mean that your heater core has a leak in it and is leaking a bit of fluid into the air as its blown inside. Can you smell a bit of anti-freeze sometimes? Take your finger and swipe the fog off the window and give it a smell (or a tiny taste if your brave) if it smells/tastes sweet you've got a leak.

Re: My frozen Car
I used to have this problem a lot, once a started removing snow from around the air intake vents and off of the hood it went away.Raybanman wrote:Your window fogging up with the heater on might mean that your heater core has a leak in it and is leaking a bit of fluid into the air as its blown inside. Wolfie does your Jeep have air conditioning?
If it does come on down to Arizona where we are.

Personally, in my Arctic ride, I have oil pan, block, transmission, and battery heaters, plus the synthetic oil.

Wolfie the old Cat has been everywhere and the Sonoran Desert region of Arizona is hands down the nicest place in North America.Whats down in AZ anyway ?

When you get a chance you should surf this region on the internet.
