Has my CPL expired?
I have been out of aviation for about 8 years. I had an aviation technology diaploma with CPL, ME, Night, IFR. Do I just need to take a refresher course, fly with an instructor and get a valid medical?
Also, I'm 33 and have about 900hrs, 500 ME PIC. I'm I too old to get back into the industry?

Re: Has my CPL expired?
The important question is when was the last time you flew?
Check out http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/gener ... urrent.htm for the 5 year, 2 year, 6 month currency provisions.
I am not sure of the process for renewing your licence once the 5 year requirement has expired. I think, but may be wrong, that you would have to redo a flight test with a DFTE and possibly re-write the written tests. I'm not 100% sure on that and someone can correct me.
The instrument rating currency provisions are different and you will likely have to re-write the INRAT as well as redo a flight test.
Although it will be a bit of a challenge to get everything renewed, you're definitely not too old to get back into it. Right now your 500 ME PIC will come in very handy for getting an F/O job on a Medevac. Many provincial health ministries require that in order to move up to Captain and it can be difficult to get. Now's the time to do it if you want to get back into it.
Good Luck!

Re: Has my CPL expired?
1) get a class one medical
2) go to an FTU, and tell the flight school you have not
flown in over 5 years. They will have you write the PSTAR
(200 written questions, they choose 50) and will have an
instructor perform a "flight review" (NOT a test) during which
you will perform all the flight test items on the commercial
flight test, to commercial flight test standards. This flight
review does not have to be performed on ONE flight, it
can be spread out.
When this is done, you have your commercial licence
privileges back. Since you have done 5 takeoffs and
landings in a single during daytime, you may carry pax
in a single during daytime.
3) write the INRAT instrument written exam. It's
a pig. Once your instrument rating has been expired
for 2 years, it's as if you never had it.
4) on a multi-engine aircraft, fly an instrument flight
test with an examiner, just like the first time.
Ok, now you have instrument privileges back again.
Remember, if you wish to carry pax at night, or
in a multi, you must have 5 takeoffs and landings
under those circumstances in the last 6 months.
Your 900TT is a bit shy. 1000TT would be better,
but as stated above your 500 multi time is very
useful in today's market.
