Flt Duty XLS.... FOR MAC

Post by sky's the limit »

For any of you computer literate people out there....

I'm trying to put Flight Duty XLS on my new Mac, it's a Mac Book Pro, Dual Core, runs the MS Office Suite no trouble. Can't get XLS to run for me, keep getting a window popping up with something about DOS mode not working and a whole pile of text.

Can anybody help me out with this issue??? It's worth a helicopter ride of equal value to a TC fine....Lol

Thanks in advance,

Why not contact the people who put out the software? I have found them to be extremely helpful in the past.

From the Flight XLS site:
All the FLTDUTY Editions are written in Visual Basic 6.0 and therefore require Windows 95 or later environment with access to the Windows Registry and Windows shared files. This usually means operation on a PC or a Mac with Windows installed.

FLTDUTY is not a spreadsheet program, nor is it compatable with Microsoft Excel on PC's or PDA's
So...it is not a Mac issue, nor an Excel issue...you ARE running Windows on your Mac I assume to be receiving DOS (*shiver*) errors?!

Sorry, so are you running Windows on your Mac then? Either booting into it or in a virtualization using a program like Parallels? Because unless you are, from what I can see the program is Windows-only, not compatible natively with the Mac operating system. It sounds like the program is trying to run and thinks the Mac operating system is DOS mode.

I've never used windows on a mac - but you might want to try alt-clicking (or whatever the equilvalent of a right click is for a mac), going to properties, and trying to run it in compatability mode for windows 95?

STL, try running the Windows emulator (I can't remember the name - senior moment) then load the xls program. The problem might be that you might have to run a Windows version of Office, not the Mac version? I am off to the Mac dealer this aft to price a new one - I'll try and find out how to do that (is it in the finder menu or the 'Apple' menu?).

STL:

When FLTDUTYXLS was first created it was called that name because of Windows only allowed 10 letters as a file name not because it was a Excel spreadsheet, the acutal program is not Excel based, it is as you know a .exe windows program, in order for it to be able to run on your mac you will have to run Windows (use XP not vista) using boot camp, parallels, VMWare fusion, then once you have windows on the mac (dual boot with boot camp or visualization with Parallels or VMWare) then you can run FLTDUTYXLS within the that version of windows. Their was some threads on this on vertical I saw a awhile back as well.

Hope it helps....fellow mac user here too... (got a macbook)

I have set up 3 macs to run windows with parallels. It works great.

If you pm your email I will send what you need for the cost of a few beers next time you are in YXY or for the trade of some of your photography knowledge.

I would have to totally agree, I use LogTen Pro and while it's not cheap it is unbelievable and the developer is one very nice guy who lives in Nelson, BC. It embarrasses every other logbook/duty tracking program out there, Windows or otherwise. And STL, if you are intending to use legit copies of Paralles/Windows, it'll be far cheaper to get a new logbook program. It has an amazing import utility to transport data from virtually any format - for sure comma-delimited - into LogTen.

There. My endorsement for the day - and no I do not receive any consideration for doing so!

Hey cool! I just went to the site for the first time in months to get the link and I see it now has an iPhone compatible version as well! SWEEET! Seeing as one of my first after-landing/shutdown tasks is to start up my iPhone, now I can just update my logbook at the same time!

try downloading the trial version of Crossover and see if it works... It's hit and miss, but at least you don't need to install windows.

Whoa there folks.

I HAVE to. Two of the companies I work for run their entire companies off Flt Duty XLS..... I don't have a choice. Believe me, I'm not happy about it, I don't even particularly like the program.

Anyway, see how goes.

hey guys,

the reason people are still using flight duty is that companies had purchased it in the past, and are still using it to track pilot times, so it's good to be compatible...

stl,

i have a mac and simply partitioned my harddrive with a free program called "bootcamp". you will still have to buy/steal a windows OS to load on. "parallels" allows windows and mac OS to run at the same time but costs over $100.00. so....i chose bootcamp over "parallels" because i only update my duty times a couple of times a month and restarting my computer in windows to update was no big deal...!

I think I've probably heard from STL and we've worked through the problem. Guess he still doesn't like FLTDUTY XLS much, but probably can keep working with it.

The problem with FLTDUTY XLS and MAC is that the program is written in Visual Basic and requires Windows... I guess there is no easy way to change that.

I looked at the logbook software and am sure it is a fine logbook substitute. FLTDUTY was never meant to be a logbook for pilots. It is designed to track duty times and flight time limits and apply the CARs. There are lots of options, convolutions, exceptions and unique requirements in the Regulations and Standards. FLTDUTY can handle them all, but it is not a pilot logbook.

I wouldn't suggest CrossOver for anyone but computer-savvy pilots. I'm a beta tester on CrossOver, and while many Windows apps DO work, most are a little wonky. And some you don't realize its wonkiness until you really dig down into the program.
