Psychologist question

Post by digs29 »

Hello,

Just curious...has anyone ever visited a shrink on here? will it affect your medical? could it affect I mean? I have often thought of going to talk out some problems I have had....mainly anxiety related, or relationship related....stuff which really doesn't affect my flying health, mostly social situations....but have been scared due to the fact that I don't want to lost my medical...would love to hear some input.

digs29 never visited one myself but I would be careful. If you are going to do it, then I would suggest you do it alone without a referral from your doctor. Your doctor is obligated by law to document it and of course it will end up on your Transport Medical Report. Why don't you save yourself lots of money and post your problems on this site. There are lots of wizards here who will solve all your problems and you will be feeling better before you know it.

Good Luck!

CLguy, forgot to mention that after discussing your problems with some here you will probably end up feeling superior.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

From what I understand there is doctor/patient confidentiality...so if you see a doctor other than your aviation doc they can't report you. I got this straight from a doctor whose husband is a pilot. Now if you were to ask for stress leave then I'd be concerned. So go ahead, talk to someone....

Don't go looking for trouble. There's lots of pilots who go to see all kinds of folks in the Medical professions for all sorts of reasons and keep their mouths shut about it. Answer the questions the AME ASKS truthfully, BUT volunteer NOTHING........unless you enjoy playing roulette.

One other thing...don't see a psychiatrist they seem too keen on solving problems with meds. A psychologist is more inclined to sit back and listen. They'll help you find a solution to your problems and not try masking them with drugs. And of course don't talk about it on your next medical...they're on a need to know basis. I think we're all responsible enough to take some "time off" if needed.
