Islander Question
Just got a job on an islander. Are they really as loud as they say? Should I look to upgrade my headset from a passive DC10-13.4 to something ANR like the Telex 50D?

Re: Islander Question
Congrats GGGQ
Welcome to the world of the BN2 flyiers! You will love everything about the aircraft, that I call "The poor man's Twotter". Speed is the only thing you won't get but you'll have the time of your life on small shitty airstrips with any wind. If I remember well, the max xwind limit is 30 kts in the book. Not too bad for a Vmc of 39!
To aswer your question, yes, do yourself a favor and buy the best headphone you can afford. You ears are worth more than $1,200 right? Yup, she's as noisy as sh'e nice, gentle and forgiving.
Enjoy and let us know how you like it!

Re: Islander Question
Thanks, from the threads around it seems the Telex 50D is the favorite around here. I'll probably start shopping around for one.

Re: Islander Question
I use a set of DC H10-13S's, and I'm not deaf..... yet. I tried the new DC X11 and it was crap. I don't really like the noise cancelling, what with the wires and batteries and all that jazz. I find I get the best sleep in the Islander if I put earplugs in and then put on my headset. Plus then I can pretend to not hear the guy in the other seat.

Re: Islander Question
I just use the DC H10-13.4's in the Islander.
My hearing is still good... i just choose not to listen.

Re: Islander Question
Great machine to fly, Loud as f*ck though, noise cancelling definetly worth the money. Another tip,(especially for pax) is to get climb power and props set right after takeoff, that will definetly save you and your pax ears. hope you have lots of batteries cause the BN2A will eat through em no problem. Have fun with it.

Re: Islander Question
YESSS!!! Congrats there are not enough Islander threads on here! First off Skip the DC X11 for a BN2 there good for modern aircraft wiring and quiet AC not BN2's. Anyway I would find a nice headset with the option to plug your Ipod into because as said before your not going anywhere in a hurry and who cares if you want to build time. Not sure if you have a Cojo or not or what type of flying your doing but she sure is a sweet bush machine! Nice wide stance and slow speed on approach its made to have fun, once you have some time on her your envelope of what she can do will widen and will get you home every night. Not sure if it was just my bird or its all BN2's but for better Vis find some 210 spray for window cleaning if your going to be down in dirty in the shit that stuff works great to keep you seeing on the interesting days.
Who are you flying for?? PM me if you don't want to broadcast it.
Enjoy it.

Re: Islander Question
I got the job in Gillam posted on here. So day VFR single pilot. I'm excited if not a little freaked out at moving that far/ to the middle of nowhere. (originally from the east coast and have never been to Manitoba and gillam is 1/10th the size of the smallest town i've been in) Yeah I haven't heard many good things about the X11 though I love my 10-13.4. As I said the favorite around here seems to be the telus 50D, monday i'll head out to a couple of pilot shops and see it for myself.

Re: Islander Question
Hey....what's a Cannuck mean when they say they are from the east coast? Just curious. I would assume that means Halifax or maybe New Brunswick or PEI or something??? I'm still trying to get my head around how Sault St Marie can be called NWO, since to me it's SW at best being right next to Minnesota and all.. Must be my yank tendencies???
Re: Islander Question
Saint John NB to be specific, Yeah i consider NS PEI and NB east coast, not sure what to classify Newfoundland yet

Re: Islander Question
Hi GGGQ,
If you're going in Gillam, make sure you bring a portable hobby, i.e. get an ARF R/C model or ask if you can access a corner to build one, or anything to keep busy on rainy days cause it is definitely a very boring place. Great fishing around though, lots of black bear right on the tarmac. If you like wildlife, you're in business. I don't recommend the only bar in town, well, not too late at night as it can get kind of wild in there too. I think you'll have a good boss and you'll enjoy the job. Let us know.
Regards

Re: Islander Question
Hey man congrats on the job. The Islander is one hell of an airplane. You'll have alot fun. As far a the headset goes...stick with your old one. I dont find our Islanders that loud. I just wear my MP3 player headphones under my headset, and that seems to cut down on the noise.

Re: Islander Question
cool, thanks for the pics and the advice (finances are tight this month and i would prefer to NOT spend $700 on another headset)
Re: Islander Question
The only time the Islander will scare you is just after you stopped and you take off your headset, open the door to step out after you forgot to shut off the mags! Keeeerist!

Re: Islander Question
When I was picking up the "new" Islander I tried to do this, just to test it out, and I couldn't get the door open. It has a locking mechanism so if the mags are engaged the pilot door is locked. I figured this out PDQ... I've only known one Islander pilot who had to climb over the seats and out the back door...xsbank wrote:The only time the Islander will scare you is just after you stopped and you take off your headset, open the door to step out after you forgot to shut off the mags! Re: Islander Question
Definitely keep the Davey Clark 10-13.4
Use earplugs underneath it and turn up the volume on the radio.
Works better than anything else I've ever heard and the 10-13.4 is one of the most comfortable headsets around.

Re: Islander Question
the best price i found on the 50D was at aviall, 1-800-AVIALL-1 more of a parts supply store, they came in cheeper than any pilot supply store

Re: Islander Question
PEOPLE LIKE THIS GUY MAKE ME SICK, HE TAKES THE JOB....THEN QUITS AFTER TWO MONTHS BECAUSE HE DOESENT LIKE LIVING IN THE NORTH. HE GIVES A BAD NAME TO ALL THE GUYS WHO WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR A JOB LIKE THIS. THERE ARE GUYS OUT THERE, LIKE MYSELF, WHO WOULD MOVE ANYWHERE AND ACTUALLY WORK HARD FOR THIS KIND OF FLYING OPPORTUNITY.

It will come back to bite him in his non-islander-flying ass...I hope. Although he's probably wearing his big watch drinking $5 coffee with a crowd gathered around spewing tales of his arctic conquests of witch no one has seen the like since Franklin ate his shoes to survive....and he’s laughing at us for still being up north…asshole.
