I have to agree with the Marlin GG 45/70. An absolute cannon with 300 or 405 Grain load. small and compact and capable of getting good hits 100 yards away. 4+1 and nothing is sticking around if its still alive when hit. Slugs are great but be prepared to start getting decent accuracy at 30 yards and closer when the target is charging. I have been charged by several bears and had a cougar scare the crap out of me from about 20 yards. just happend to turn on the trail and he was laying down behind me. Not sure if I walked past him or if he was stalking me. none the less anything is better than nothing. Most black bears are scared of their own shadows, brown bears are a little more formidable. and Grizzly's scare the crap out of me. Big, and made for killing really big animals, much larger than me.

I guess nobody caught the joke on that one eh, the Saiga is an automatic weapon which, unless you have your prohibited PAL, is illegal to own in canada. Not only that but that firearm is also only available to law enforcement. And you can get CZ 858's in Canada that are semi-auto only and have all magazines pinned to 5. The 858 is an awesome peice of machinery; basically the same design as the 1947 Kalashnikov but with all parts made of billet steel instead of the original stamped.Northern Skies wrote:re: the saiga. I think it's under one of the prohibition orders. I think the only AK-derived thing that's legal here is the Valmet. I could be wrong though, it looks like a nice choice for a semi. But I'm sure I would have seen one at the range by now.

There are plenty of semi-auto saiga's on the market in the states. Lots of civilians have'em. I'm sure some have the auto's too, in some states all you need to do is pay a $200 tax stamp and you're good to go.
The 858 is a lot of fun. However, it's internals are not based on the AK. It's actually quite a different rifle.
Don't get me started on the 5-round rule... how stupid is that?

I'm sure it's the same spring. I may or may not have seen an old man do it once in protest. Mine are legal and I cannot advocate such an activity.
I've fired an M1A with real 20-rounders down south. Practically, It's not really slower if you're dropping mags and counting shots with the 5/20's. After a bit of practice you can swap those mags out in one-half to one second. It's just a pain in the ass carrying all of that crap around. I don't know what they were thinking when they made that law, that we would own only one mag? It would be nice to be able to carry all the rounds you're bringing into the bush with you in a convenient package like that.
Here's another silly one: sound suppressors. I can't find evidence of a single criminal use of these in canada. It's just some people sacred by hollywood that lobbied for their ban. In some european countries, it's considered a health risk NOT to use one when hunting, and they are encouraged. Funny how the people in hollywood who made their millions by glorifying the criminal and irrresponsible use of firearms are the same ones who are lobbying against responsible firearm owners... damn hypocrites.

Actually you all got it wrong. I pack a 22 and a bottle of whisky. If I'm not found by the time the whisky is gone there's always the 22
Re: Best Bear gun?
well to go back on target if you were going for a handgun the preference seems to be a Double Action revolver. would you pick a Ruger Redhawk in the .44 or a S&W 629 in the .44
Re: Best Bear gun?
Niether! Got me a Taurus Raging Bull in .44 Magnum. Very nice pistol that packs a huge punch.
Re: Best Bear gun?
completely forgot about taurus. though you can get the other two in a shorter 4-5 inch barrel than Taurus's 6 and 8 inch. Bit nicer to carry but taurus makes a fine revolver too.
Re: Best Bear gun?
I've always liked SA revolvers. I really like the Super Blackhawk in plain old .44 mag. The SA makes you "think" more about shot placement than just "squeezing" off rounds. And you'll need to think shot placement with just about any revolver.

Re: Best Bear gun?
I agree Doc, plus SA's are just fun to shoot anyways. Nothin like a day of shootin with a .45 Colt SA revolver, not a round meant for bears of course, but the fun-factor is unbeatable

Re: Best Bear gun?
Is that anything like a "Red Rider" bee bee gun? Might be a little "light in the loafers" for a bear?

I keep shooting the bear right in the mouth until it slowly dies from lead poisoning. Patience is a virtue.

Re: Best Bear gun?
I wacked a big old bear last year with a Remington gold series 12ga with a 400 grain rifled slug and barrel from 80 yards. That little slug is traveling at 2000ft p/sec, all it took was one shot. I know it's not the lightest gun, but works for me.
eh?
Re: Best Bear gun?
Why would you shoot a bear at 80 yards? Were you that hungry, or was he some sort of threat? We're talking bear guns for defense here. For "sport" I support the right to arm bears!

Imagine the surprise if the cubs were in the bushes too.
I have an 870 express magnum with an extended tube (6+1 - 3"). Love it. Will likely end up getting a pistol grip/folding stock to cut down on the length.
Re: Best Bear gun?
Always keep a 1/2 pound or so of Italian T4 in your lunchbox. Set up trip wires 50 yards outside of your camp. I suggest the following for close quarters security http://www.defensereview.com/stories/aa ... otgun).jpg (copy and paste that to see it)
Also remember, if it bleeds...
we can kill it

Re: Best Bear gun?
Ive used a 870 with an 18 inch barrel and seven shot tube. Had to shoot a bear that charged us while bowhuning. Slugs worked just fine at about 10-20 yards.

Guns scare the
. But 12G pumps are the scariest or them all. I'm not real crazy about AR15's either.

The best "Brown Bear" of them all!
