That's why I buy eco-friendly detergents

Huh?
I must be thick because I don't see the connection between laundry detergent and guns.

Hedley, if you haven't noticed, doesn't like the government. We have a gun registry here in Canada that costs a lot of money and arguably doesn't have any affect on gun crime. Since a few people in Japan have decided to kill themselves as well a try to kill others with laundry detergents Hedley is merely suggesting the we register our laundry detergents in a vain attempt to stem off laundry detergent related crime. It was Hedleys way of mocking our gun registry and the anti-gun folks who want to ban guns in Canada.

No, you're not the one who's "thick".I must be thick because I don't see the connection between laundry detergent and guns.

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.
After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

This is entertaining. Maybe you can tell us how this relates to gun control in Canada and your sex life with your right h.., er, girlfriend?

The point would be when firearms are not available people will acquire other means to kill themselves, or hurt others. I saw a stat somewhere that showed the assaults using weapon (Firearm/Non Firearm) over a period from firearms legal to gun ban date. Results are very interesting.
Will try to dig it up.
Re: This is why gun control is so important
Well shoot (pun intended), let's give everybody a gun then and save them the trouble of looking for another means of killing someone.
Re: This is why gun control is so important
I've been in a few places where guns run wild.
I was more concerned with the "other ways" they invented that tried to kill us.

personally I think we should concern ourselves with trying to stop people from killing people, not gun's from killing people.

Effectiveness of the gun registry in:
1. Reducing violent crime from illegal handguns = 0%
2. Reducing the number of farmers shooting trespassers/poachers = 100%
Oops, the gun registry didn't include rifles and shotguns until Bill C-68 in 1995, so I guess the GR had nothing to do with the drop in gun violence from long guns.

Gun crimes among teens on the rise: StatsCan
Last Updated: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 | 12:43 PM ET
CBC News
More young people used guns in violent crimes in Canada in 2006, part of an increase seen over the past four years, a Statistics Canada report released Wednesday says.
Police forces reported 8,105 victims of violent gun crime over the year, ranging from assault to robbery and homicide. Two-thirds of the crimes involved handguns.
The report notes that firearm-related crimes overall have remained stable from 2002 to 2006.
But in three of those four years, the number of teenagers aged 12 to 17 accused in such crimes rose, for a total increase of 32 per cent since 2002.
The report says 1,287 young people were accused in 2006 of firearm-related crimes, mostly robbery.
The report comes amid commotion over the federal government's push for the Senate to approve an omnibus bill focusing on gun crime.
Under the crime bill, there would be higher mandatory sentences for gun crimes and accused gun offenders would be subject to restricted bail.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has threatened to force a spring election unless the Liberal-dominated Senate speeds the bill into law by March 1.
Vancouver has the most gun violence
The highest rates of gun violence, when population is taken into account, were found in the country's largest cities, with Vancouver at the top, followed by Winnipeg and Toronto.
Vancouver had 45.3 violent offences involving guns for every 100,000 people, with Winnipeg's rate 43.9 and Toronto's 40.4.
The national average was 27.5 gun-related violent offences per 100,000 people. Only three of the largest cities — Ottawa, Quebec City and Hamilton — fell below the average.
Edmonton led with the highest rate of gun-related homicide in 2006, followed by the southern B.C. city of Abbotsford.
For the third year in a row, Halifax reported the highest rate of robbery involving firearms, a rate nearly double that of Vancouver's and Toronto's.
Gun crime higher in West
The report found firearm-related violence, as with crime in general, was higher in Western provinces than in the East.
Rates in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia and Alberta were two or three times greater than in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
Provincially, Saskatchewan and Alberta had the highest firearm-related homicide rates; Nova Scotia, due to Halifax's high numbers, had the highest rate of robbery committed with a gun.
The Statistics Canada report notes that guns account for only 2.4 per cent of all violent victimizations. Clubs and other blunt objects are higher with three per cent, and knives make up more than double that with 6.2 per cent.
In 2006, police reported 190 homicides committed by a firearm, 33 fewer than the previous year.
From the 1970s to the 1990s, the rate of gun-related homicide fell, largely due to killings involving rifles and shotguns dropping, Statistics Canada says.

People own handguns to protect themselves from violent "neighboors", probably will never happen but its insurance right?
Canada has a military to protect us from violent "neighboors on a much larger scale. Again, probably will never happen but insurance right?
Private registered firearms owners are trained and certified and for the most part safe & responsible, however ocasionally somebody goes crazy, I.E. Montreal.

The military are also highly trained, however ocasionaly someone goes crazy.

Now, if handguns are to be banned, do the same rules not apply on a larger scale? Should we not also disolve the military, after all if there are no weapons it will be safe right? With the exception of all the other countries maintaining weapons, again the same applies on the smaller scale. Now the criminals with illegaly imported hand guns from the US of A no longer have to worry about people shooting back. I would like to see the money "well spent" on the gun registry be put into protecting the border, stopping the flow of illegal firearms. In the same capacity, they can also stop the hard drugs from flowing in, think about it, killing two birds with one beretta. (pun intended). It is well proven that where the hard addictive drugs go, so comes the profit margin, and surprise surprise......gun violence. If the government could successfully acomplish that, and I am very skeptical of the government actually acomplishing anything, but if they could, us gun enthusiast's would no longer have an excuse, or major need to own handguns.
My $.02

Re: This is why gun control is so important
An oddly worded question, but I'll take a stab at where you're going with it. If the gun registry is beefed up to include illegal handguns in the hopes of decreasing violent crimes involving guns, and the rate of violent crimes involving guns goes up, de facto, one would conclude that the registry had 0% effectiveness. One might even argue that it could have been a contributing factor to the increase. Granted, other factors contribute to the increase in the violent crime rate. What you're suggesting perhaps is that without the registry, violent crimes involving guns would have been higher?Rockie wrote:Really? Gun control is communism, what we need is a healthy cull of inner-city Toronto and Vancouver, and a general cull of quebec, how copy?
Re: This is why gun control is so important
Not at all. What I'm saying is that any rise or drop in gun crime cannot be attributed to the existence or not of gun control. If a crime does not get committed because in the heat of passion there wasn't a handy .357 hidden under the sofa pillow how can that then become part of a statistic? It didn't happen. Similarly a gun crime occurring in the absense of gun control can't necessarily be blamed on that lack because the gun might have been there regardless. These are long term societal and cultural attitudes that can't readily be pinned to legislation or quantified by statistics.C23flyer wrote:An oddly worded question, but I'll take a stab at where you're going with it. So you would have to agree then that establishing a gun registry is pointless as there is no way of knowing whether it is or is not working.Rockie wrote:Not at all. Define what "working" is? The gun registry isn't the "magic bullet" that will end gun crime overnight. It's just the right thing to do. Those who point to the lack of statisical results in the few years that the gun registry has been around just don't know what they're talking about. So you would have to agree then that establishing a gun registry is pointless as there is no way of knowing whether it is or is not working.

I would compare the gun registry to christianity. It was a good idea in the beginning....good intentions gone wrong. $1 Billion so people can register their glue guns????

Re: This is why gun control is so important
I don't know, 1 billion pales in comparison to the cost of the failed Afghanistan war and occupation (mission). Were at over 3 billion and going on at over 100 million a month. Not to mention the Canadian lives lost, and future. Going on 7 years for a mission which was supposed to last only 6 months. What a fucking tragedy on a GRAND SCALE!!!! Somehow the gun registry mismanagement just seems insignificant by comparison!
Re: This is why gun control is so important
It was never only supposed to last 6 months. The UN approved it initially for 6 months, to be reviewed and renewed later.Dex wrote:Going on 7 years for a mission which was supposed to last only 6 months.
Or do you think that because you get a prescription renewed at the pharmacy that the doctor was bullshitting you about your recovery time? It's not like this was never done before. Cyprus was initially approved in 64, for 3 months. Anyone who thought Afghanistan would last 6 is an idiot and completely ignorant of history.
