Reserve at Air Canada

For all of us that are just waiting patiently for the next ground schools, and wondering about the life at big red... I was just wondering, when on reserve what is the time requirement to report to work? At my current employer its 1:15, but I would guess with the large cities in Air Canada's bases that it would need to be longer. Thanks.

You have 2 hours to be at the airport...groundtoflightdeck what is the recent news for the next ground school ?

2hrs- I guess that could be tight for guys coming in at the wrong time of day, although I can't imagine they could give much longer. Is it 14hrs a day on call on Reserve?

As for the ground schools, I think its pretty official that there will be no hew hires until the fall at this point. Better enjoy the summer and keep the fingers crossed!

Two hours to the airport isn't the exact whole truth. Two hours to the airport plus one hour and fifteen munites to flight plan and get the A/C pushed and off the gate. So in reality, you have three hours and ffiteen minutes to get the show on the road. How many times over the years screw sched has told me that the F/O will meet me on the plane with the flight plan, and my responce is, "NO", I will meet him in flight planning and we will do a proper job of it in the name of a safe operation, the flight will be off the gate three hours and fifteen minutes from the time I get off this phone. That's usually when they say "thanks but know thanks" and try and find someone else. I also explain to them, if they call me back the time now starts at that point, had one almost crying one night when he called me fortyfive minutes after his original call. Still had to point out to him that time doesn't start until the moment I hang up, and I'm sure the longer he waits the F/A's are going to be over their duty day, not to mention the F/O.

I don't particularly like to be this way, but there is certain crew shed personel that bring a zeal to the job that is unsavory to say the least. And I'm forced to treat them all the same just to remain consistant in my approach to the whole reserve thing. I am generally a fairly good block holder, but now and then I do reserve so I have the choice to fly or not. But, if flights come down to me or come back up at me I always play by the rules, not by the crew sched credo "What ever it takes to get a bum in the seat".

i am sorry if i sound a little ignorant,...but Do pilots plan and file their own flight plans at AC or maybe i am missing something here?

the airline i fly for in the U.S, flight plans are all planned and filed by flight control(dispatch) and then they send over the Flight Release (F.Plan+wx+Perfomance+notams+loads)...is this the way its done at AC?

No. At AC you check in on the computer, then print your flight plan (it's all been planned and filed for you). You can check weather, speak with your dispatcher, print specifics for MEL'd items, read new aircraft specific bulletins (and company wide bulletins), etc. It doesn't take long, but you have to check in 1:15 before push-back. Fairly standard routine, I would think.

that's what i was hoping for, in our company you check in 45 mins prior to pushback and do those duties as you mentioned earlier, incl boarding and paerwork that goes with it, being the 1st flight...usually is enough time, but 24 min turns we do in IAD/ORD/LGA/PHL....etc is not enough.....what sort of turn around time is typical (of course depending on the equip/routes) but let's say for the EMB's you fly?

35 min turns for the EMJ. They tried shorter turn-times, but found it wasn't enough.
