4 engine jet - what is it?

Post by Flybabe »

Sorry I can't post a picture but I'll try to describe it.

Looks like a DC 9 but thicker body and with 4 jets, arranged like a Jetstar. The one I've seen in in military grey here at Kirkland AFB in NM.

Any of you military types know what it is? I think the Air Force boys would run me down if they saw me trying to snap a pic.

Slight chance it could have been an IL-62M too.

Great... lol...

If I get to taxi by it again, I'll look at the windshield. That seems to be about the only thing that might distinguish it from a distance. Can't get anywhere near it..

It's grey but I don't see any markings from 1/2 a mile away. The guards in the Humvee seem pretty intent on enforcing the NO PICTURE rules. I'll see if I can get a tail end shot of it tomorrow.

Seriously doubt a military IL-62 would be seen at an American airbase.

..and yes, that's an SP in the background.

The IL-62 is unlikely to have refueling pods under the wing. The refuelers are the only VC-10's left.

I'm gonna risk it - will have picture tomorrow - from the rear, anyways. Of the airplane.

Some of those VC-10s were ex-BOAC/BA airliners, I was a passenger on one in the 70's. Rule Britannia!

Ok, HERE IT IS!

I'm sure it's the VC-10. The tail isn't as sleek as the IL-62. Thanks everyone!
