That was annouced a few weeks ago. Bombardier were not getting many orders for these models, not jenough to justify leaving the line open. The Q400 should keep Downsview busy for a while.

But giving up that segment of the market completely to ATR is not good, I mean look ATR is updating their 42/72 series with the new 500/600's, and rumblings about a completely new design to replace the current design in about 5-10 years.....all Bombardier has planned is to continually stretch the current Dash 8 design....no word from them on a replacement design...

thats not always a bad thing. why not improve on an already proven aircraft

Not only Embraer.

I often fly on these. They are not bad. better, actually than the cluncker I flew to North Bay recently...

Don't you mean, there's also Embrear. ATRs are not Embrears.Expat wrote:Not only Embraer.
Embrear has a smaller 30 seat turboprop (Embrear 120) and a whole bunch of smaller jets that compete with the Q200 and Q300. There's not too many places the Dash 8s go that the jets can't and the general public has long favoured flying on jets because they think they are safer. And then there's the Saab 340 and Saab 2000, although I don't think they are in production anymore.

You are correct if you mean the 300 and 400. The 100 flies schedules to several airports in Europe which are definitely not suitable for jets : Vadso, Vardo, Berlevag, Mehamn, Honningsvag, Hammerfest, Svolvaer, Narvik, Sandnesjoen, Leknes, Mo i Rana, Mosjoen, Stokmarknes, Rorvik, and Namsos, to name but a few, and that is only in Norway. Some of these runways are in unspeakable terrain and lengths of 800 to 1000 meters. The Dash 8 100 replaced the Dash 7 and the Twin Otter on these routes and has been hugely successfull. I don`t know of anything that can replace it for this type of operation. Are there any pressurised, Cat 2 capable, helicopters that can carry 37 passengers on the market?
